Sega Affirms Development of Classic Reboots Despite Super Game Cancellation
May 13, 2026Sega has confirmed that reboots of Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi remain in active development, unaffected by the cancellation of its ambitious Super Game project. The publisher’s Q4 2026 financials show all four reboots, along with new Virtua Fighter and Alien Isolation games, are still planned for release in or after the financial year ending March 2027.
Sega has officially cancelled its long-anticipated Super Game project, as quietly revealed in its Q4 2026 financial results presentation. The Super Game, first announced five years ago, was intended to be a series of multiple “triple-A titles that cross over Sega’s comprehensive range of technologies” and which would “go beyond the traditional framework of games.” However, despite scrapping Super Game, Sega has restated that all previously announced reboots of its most iconic IPs remain on track and are not affected by this major shift in strategy.
During The Game Awards in December 2023, Sega revealed that fresh entries in the Shinobi, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi franchises were in active development. Since that reveal, only Shinobi: Art of Vengeance has been released to date, receiving a 5-star review from VGC, while the other four titles are still to launch.
In the latest quarterly financial report, Sega listed the ongoing development of four major reboots, Jet Set Radio, Streets of Rage, Golden Axe, and Crazy Taxi, alongside other key projects including a new Virtua Fighter and an Alien Isolation sequel. All these projects are currently scheduled for the company’s financial year ending March 2027 or beyond, representing a continued investment in classic franchises long after the cancellation of its live service-focused plans.
Status of Each Sega Classic Reboot
- Crazy Taxi: Sega describes the new installment as featuring “innovative and fresh style driving action” and delivering a “cheerful feeling of freedom [crossed with a] fusion of nature and city.”
- Jet Set Radio: The publisher promises a “counter-culture Tokyo street open world,” inviting players to “Experience the ‘rebellion’ movement that feels free in a suffocating society. Make friends, increase your fans, and create a movement.”
- Golden Axe: Sega states, “Defeat your enemies with a variety of attacks with swords and magic. The legendary story about the battle axe ‘Golden Axe’ is about to begin.”
- Streets of Rage: The return is pitched as a reboot of the “beloved side-scrolling beat ’em up action series,” letting players “take control of one of the ex-officers and make the city a place where people no longer have to walk the Streets of Rage.”
Shinobi: Art of Vengeance is the sole reboot released as of May 2026, with VGC awarding it a 5-star review. Official teaser trailers for the remaining reboots were unveiled at the 2023 Game Awards, and no substantial additional details have been presented since then.
Sega’s Roadmap and Franchise Strategy in 2026
Sega’s latest disclosures make clear that the cancellation of its Super Game, which aimed to unify its technology portfolio and break conventional game boundaries, has not impacted the ongoing development of its classic franchise reboots. All four headline reboots, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Streets of Rage, and Golden Axe, remain in full development for next-gen systems, with current release targets set at financial year 2026-2027 or later. Sega’s updated schedule also includes a new Virtua Fighter iteration and an Alien Isolation sequel under the same window.
According to the financial presentation, Sega is pivoting away from large-scale “live service” ambitions, prioritising revitalisation of its deep back-catalogue. The company’s direct summary states: “While the Super Game project is no more, previously announced reboots are still in development, and unaffected by Super Game’s cancellation.”
Current Sega Reboot Schedule (as of Q4 2026):
- Jet Set Radio: In development, release date post-March 2027
- Crazy Taxi: In development, release date post-March 2027
- Golden Axe: In development, release date post-March 2027
- Streets of Rage: In development, release date post-March 2027
- Virtua Fighter (new title): In development
- Alien Isolation (sequel): In development
- Shinobi: Art of Vengeance: Released
Sega’s direction reflects a renewed focus on brand legacy and nostalgia, distancing itself from cancelled live service undertakings. Each reboot is positioned to bring familiar worlds to a new generation without compromise due to shifting corporate priorities.
