Marathon permanent PvE mode due December 8: October reset explained
September 15, 2026Marathon’s major September update is no longer arriving as planned. Here is what happens on October 6, what moves to Symbiosis on December 8, and why Vault Breaker is not the permanent PvE mode.
Bungie has moved Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience from its previously planned September update to the Symbiosis update on December 8, 2026. The change affects the major content drop previously planned for September 22, but it does not mean Marathon will be quiet until December: a smaller update, including a progression and economy reset, is due on October 6.
The key distinction for players is straightforward. The October update is a reset and live-service refresh. Symbiosis is the larger December update that will bring the permanent PvE experience alongside several other features.
The revised Marathon update timeline
- September 22, 2026: Bungie had previously said Season 3 would begin on this date, with a Perimeter revamp, a Runner shell, weapons, equipment and other additions planned. Bungie has now moved the content planned for September to December.
- October 6, 2026: Marathon will receive a progression and economy reset, a Rewards Pass, quality-of-life improvements, and live tuning and balance updates.
- December 8, 2026: The Symbiosis update is scheduled to deliver the content moved from September, including Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience.
The Marathon Dev Team said, “The content originally planned for September will now arrive as part of our Symbiosis update on December 8.”
Players should therefore not treat September 22 as the arrival date for the permanent PvE experience or the broader September feature set. Bungie has confirmed the moved content’s new destination, but it has not said whether December 8 formally marks Season 3, a renamed season or a major update operating under its revised cadence.
What is happening with the October 6 reset?

The October update remains important, but it is not the delayed major content release. Bungie says it will include a progression and economy reset, a Rewards Pass, quality-of-life work, and continuing live tuning and balance updates.
The announcement does not specify which individual forms of progress will reset or what will carry over. Players will need to wait for Bungie to clarify the reset’s scope.
Just as importantly, Bungie has not described the October refresh as the launch of Marathon’s permanent PvE offering. That feature is explicitly attached to Symbiosis in December.
Vault Breaker is not Marathon’s permanent PvE mode
Vault Breaker and the permanent PvE experience should not be treated as the same thing. In its July preview, Bungie called Vault Breaker Marathon’s first experimental PvE mode. It ran for a limited period from July 21 through August 4 while the developer said it was working toward a full PvE mode.
The Symbiosis announcement separately identifies the December feature as Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience. Bungie has not explained how it will work, how it will differ mechanically from Vault Breaker, or whether it will support particular team sizes, matchmaking arrangements or difficulty options. Those details remain unconfirmed.
What will the Marathon Symbiosis update add?
Beyond the permanent PvE experience, Bungie says the December 8 Symbiosis update is planned to include:
- a refreshed Perimeter experience;
- a social space with a firing range;
- a new Runner shell;
- an experimental PvP Team Deathmatch mode; and
- improvements intended to help new players get started.
The experimental label attached to Team Deathmatch matters. Bungie has not said whether the mode will be permanent or time-limited, or whether it will have separate rewards and progression.
Is Bungie ending Marathon seasons?
Bungie has not announced the end of seasons. It has announced a narrower change to how major updates will be scheduled. The Marathon Dev Team wrote that it is “moving away from a strict seasonal schedule.” Bungie explained that major updates will no longer be tied to fixed seasonal deadlines.
That is a meaningful shift from Marathon’s original delivery plan. In March, Bungie described seasons as lasting about three months, with new content and progression resets delivered through that cycle. Moving away from fixed deadlines changes that timetable, but it does not establish that seasons or seasonal progression have been cancelled.
For now, the practical reading is that Marathon still has a progression and economy reset scheduled for October 6, while its permanent PvE experience and the rest of the delayed major content are scheduled for Symbiosis on December 8. Whether Symbiosis also represents the formal start of Season 3 is a question Bungie has yet to answer.
