Gears of War: E-Day early access is live, but Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass alone does not provide access before the full release. To play early, you need the Premium Edition or the Premium Upgrade in conjunction with a Game Pass subscription. Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members without that upgrade can join when the game launches worldwide on October 6.

Xbox Wire confirmed that early access began worldwide on October 1, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC. The full launch follows at the same time on October 6.

Who can play Gears of War: E-Day early?

You can play during the early-access period if you own the Premium Edition. Game Pass subscribers can also play early if they have the Premium Upgrade. Xbox’s announcement makes the upgrade a condition of early access for Game Pass subscribers, so a subscription by itself should not be treated as an early-access entitlement.

  • Premium Edition owners: Early access began October 1.
  • Game Pass subscribers with the Premium Upgrade: Early access began October 1.
  • Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass members without the upgrade: Access begins at the full launch on October 6.

The five-day head start was also outlined in Xbox’s final pre-launch update. If you are considering the Premium Upgrade solely for early access, check the relevant storefront for your platform and region before buying. The available evidence does not establish a universal price.

Gears of War: E-Day launch time and platforms

The worldwide full release begins on October 6, 2026, at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC, according to the official launch announcement.

Gears of War: E-Day is available on Xbox Series X|S, Windows PC and Steam. Xbox also lists cloud gaming through Game Pass Ultimate and GeForce NOW, although the announcement does not establish simultaneous availability in every cloud region.

Steam is one of the game’s PC storefronts, and its official store listing describes the Premium Edition’s advance-access entitlement. Xbox’s October 1 announcement is the current source for the live early-access status and worldwide launch time.

PC requirements include a 115 GB SSD and ray-tracing GPU

PC players should check both storage and graphics compatibility before installing. Xbox’s final specifications require 115 GB of available space on an SSD at every target tier. A graphics card with dedicated hardware ray-tracing capability is also required; the official chart says GPUs without dedicated hardware ray-tracing support are unsupported.

That makes suitable ray-tracing hardware a baseline compatibility requirement, not merely an optional graphics feature. Check the precise model and capabilities of your GPU rather than assuming that its age or general performance class makes it compatible.

The published targets are 1080p at 60 FPS for minimum hardware, 1440p at 60 FPS or higher for the recommended tier, and 4K at 60 FPS or higher for the Ultra tier. The table lists DLSS, FSR, TSR or XeSS alongside the targets. PC Gamer’s report reproduces those target tiers, but they should not be interpreted as promises of native-resolution performance or identical results across different systems.

What to check before downloading

  • Confirm that you own the Premium Edition or have the Premium Upgrade with a Game Pass subscription if you want to play before October 6.
  • If you only have Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass, expect access at 8:00 a.m. PT / 15:00 UTC on October 6 unless you add the upgrade.
  • Make at least 115 GB available on an SSD rather than a mechanical hard drive.
  • Verify that your graphics card has dedicated hardware ray-tracing support.
  • Select the appropriate Xbox, Windows PC or Steam option for your platform.

Xbox also released an official Gears of War: E-Day launch gameplay trailer alongside the early-access announcement. The trailer features Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls.”
