PUBG: Black Budget cancelled as development ends after two closed alphas

PUBG: Black Budget cancelled as development ends after two closed alphas

PUBG Studios has ended development of PUBG: Black Budget before release, following closed-alpha periods in December 2025 and June 2026.

PUBG Studios has ended development of PUBG: Black Budget. The studio confirmed the decision in an official Steam community update published on September 30, 2026, ending the PUBG-branded extraction-shooter project before it reached release.

The announcement settles the immediate question for people who registered for or participated in the game’s tests: Black Budget is no longer awaiting a launch date. Its Steam store page remains online and continues to say its release is “To be announced,” but the subsequent PUBG Studios development update explicitly says development has ended.

Why was PUBG: Black Budget cancelled?

PUBG Studios did not attribute the decision to sales, player numbers, a particular technical problem or specific feedback from the closed alphas. It instead gave a broad explanation focused on whether the project’s direction could support an experience players would enjoy over time.

In its official Steam update, PUBG Studios said:

“After reviewing the project’s development status and future direction, we concluded that its current direction would not allow us to deliver an experience players could enjoy over the long term.”

The studio said it had therefore made the “difficult decision” to end development. That is the fullest public explanation available in the cited announcement, and it does not confirm any particular commercial, technical or playtest-related cause.

PUBG Studios also thanked the closed-alpha participants and said it would carry lessons from the game’s development and testing into future projects. It did not identify a successor game or commit to producing another PUBG extraction shooter.

Black Budget never launched publicly. Its first closed alpha was held across two sessions in December 2025, followed by a second closed alpha from June 26 to June 29, 2026, according to Inven Global’s chronology. PUBG Studios’ Steam community page also records the second test and its June 29 end date.

That chronology makes descriptions of the cancellation as occurring nine months after “the” closed alpha incomplete. Roughly nine months separated the September announcement from the first December test, but the second and final documented alpha ended about three months before PUBG Studios announced the end of development.

What was PUBG: Black Budget supposed to be?

The official Steam listing describes PUBG: Black Budget as an “FPP-first” tactical extraction shooter with PvPvE elements. Its premise placed players on an island caught in a time loop, where squads would face rival players and environmental threats while collecting resources to extract. The listing says sessions were designed for up to 45 players, with squads of up to three.

What happens next?

No release date was announced before development ended. PUBG Studios says it will apply what it learned from Black Budget while exploring new gameplay experiences, but its announcement does not name a replacement or confirm another extraction-shooter project.

The update also provides no information about staffing, the future of the Amsterdam team, the removal of the Steam page or whether any of Black Budget’s technology and concepts will be reused. Those points remain unconfirmed.
