Xbox COO Helen Chiang leaves Microsoft as duties are split temporarily
October 27, 2026Reporting on an internal memo says she has now left Microsoft and that her duties are being divided temporarily.
Helen Chiang has left Microsoft roughly three months after she was appointed as Xbox’s first chief operating officer, according to reporting on an internal company memo. Her departure leaves the newly created operating role without a publicly named successor while Xbox continues its wider restructuring.
The departure was communicated to employees on October 23, 2026, in a memo obtained by The Verge, according to GamesRadar+. The reported memo said Chiang was leaving Microsoft that day and that more information about COO leadership would be shared after the company finalized its plans.
Microsoft has not publicly explained the reason for Chiang’s departure. In a response to The Verge relayed by Gematsu, Xbox vice president of communications Kari Perez said, “We don’t discuss individual personnel matters.” The available reporting does not establish whether Chiang resigned, retired or was dismissed.
What Helen Chiang’s Xbox COO role covered
Xbox established the chief operating officer position for the first time in July 2026 and promoted Chiang into the role. The official announcement said she would report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma and carry responsibility across the business’s major operating areas.
“For the first time, we are establishing a Chief Operating Officer with end-to-end P&L responsibility across content, hardware, platform, and services.”
Sharma made that statement in the official Xbox Wire announcement. P&L means profit-and-loss responsibility, so the wording gave the COO an end-to-end financial and operational remit rather than responsibility for only one division.
The breadth of that remit is what makes the vacancy significant to Xbox’s internal structure. Content, hardware, platform and services were all placed within the role’s stated scope when it was created, but Xbox has not publicly detailed how each area is being assigned following Chiang’s departure.
Who is handling the Xbox COO duties now?

There is no publicly named successor. Chiang’s immediate responsibilities are being divided among other Xbox leaders while the company determines its longer-term leadership plan, according to the reported memo described by GamesRadar+ and Gematsu.
That is an interim arrangement, not confirmation that Xbox will appoint another COO with the same remit. The company has not announced who is handling each part of Chiang’s former portfolio, when a permanent decision will be made, or whether the responsibilities will eventually remain divided.
Does the departure change anything for Xbox players?
No related change has been announced for Xbox hardware, Game Pass, first-party release plans or the wider platform strategy. The immediate development concerns the management of the Xbox business, not a newly disclosed change to a product or service.
The timing nevertheless places the leadership change within Xbox’s continuing reset. In an official September restructuring update, Xbox said it was roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced changes. That update included 268 role eliminations and a studio reorganization.
For now, the confirmed public picture remains limited: Chiang has reportedly left Microsoft, other Xbox leaders are temporarily dividing her responsibilities, and the final structure of the COO function has not been announced. The reported internal memo indicated that more information would follow once those plans were finalized.
