Elden Ring Nightreign Is the Multiplayer Survival Game We Didn’t Know We Needed

Elden Ring Nightreign Is the Multiplayer Survival Game We Didn’t Know We Needed

December 13, 2024 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

At The Game Awards 2024, FromSoftware surprised everyone with the announcement of Elden Ring Nightreign, a cooperative multiplayer spinoff that promises to bring a fresh twist to the Elden Ring universe. Set in a parallel world to the original game, Nightreign combines the dark fantasy aesthetics and challenging gameplay fans adore with a roguelike survival experience designed for up to three players.

Not Just Another Multiplayer Game

While Elden Ring already featured multiplayer elements like summoning allies for boss fights and engaging in PvP duels, Nightreign takes a completely different approach. Instead of augmenting the single-player experience, this game is built entirely around cooperative gameplay.

Players team up as one of eight unique characters, each equipped with distinct ultimate abilities. Together, they must navigate Limveld, a brand-new landmass brimming with dangers, secrets, and monstrous bosses. The goal? Survive three in-game days, gather resources, and prepare for an epic final showdown against a powerful entity called the Nightlord.

A Procedurally Generated Challenge

FromSoftware’s signature difficulty gets an exciting twist with Nightreign’s roguelike mechanics. Each expedition takes place on an ever-changing map, ensuring that no two runs are the same. The game’s procedural generation will test players’ adaptability and teamwork as they face unexpected threats and dynamic environments.

Unlike traditional roguelikes, however, Nightreign doesn’t penalize players harshly for failure. While dying to the Nightlord may reset your progress for that run, you’ll retain relics that allow you to customize and upgrade your characters. This feature ensures a sense of progression, even if the Nightlord proves too formidable in earlier attempts.

New Mechanics and Traversal Options

The Nightreign trailer teased jaw-dropping traversal mechanics and gameplay innovations that elevate the experience beyond the original game.

  • Ghostly Eagles and Wall Climbing: Players can hitch a ride on spectral eagles to explore new heights or scale walls to uncover hidden paths. These traversal methods emphasize verticality and exploration, hallmarks of the Elden Ring experience.
  • Wings and Dive Attacks: Characters can sprout wings and launch aerial dive attacks, offering new ways to tackle enemies and adding a layer of dynamism to combat.
  • Dynamic Boss Arenas: The trailer also showcased expansive arenas with environmental hazards, such as a blue circle that moves inward, forcing players to stay mobile or risk being overwhelmed.

Boss Battles That Demand Teamwork

True to FromSoftware’s legacy, Nightreign is packed with massive, grotesque bosses that require strategic coordination to defeat. One of the most striking encounters involves a man riding a giant wolf in a fiery, sand-covered arena reminiscent of General Radahn’s domain.

These boss fights promise to push players’ teamwork and combat skills to their limits, making every victory a hard-earned triumph.

Preserving the Elden Ring Aesthetic

Although Nightreign is a spinoff, it remains deeply rooted in the Elden Ring lore and aesthetic. Limveld, the game’s setting, is described as a universe parallel to the events of Elden Ring. This means fans can expect a dark, mysterious world teeming with cryptic storytelling, environmental detail, and lore-rich encounters.

What About Tencent’s Mobile Adaptation?

The announcement of Nightreign coincides with ongoing rumours about a mobile adaptation of Elden Ring by Tencent. While details are scarce, Tencent’s track record with mobile versions of major franchises like PUBG and Call of Duty suggests an ambitious attempt to bring the Elden Ring experience to handheld devices.

Whether Tencent’s adaptation will tie into Nightreign or the original game remains to be seen, but it’s clear that the franchise is expanding in exciting ways.

Elden Ring Nightreign caps off an incredible year for FromSoftware, which also saw the release of Shadow of the Erdtree, a major expansion for the original game. Shadow of the Erdtree is even nominated for Game of the Year, a testament to FromSoftware’s continued dominance in the gaming industry.

Platforms and Release Date

Nightreign will launch in 2025 on the same platforms as the original game: PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC. With its cooperative gameplay and innovative mechanics, it’s shaping up to be a must-play for fans of the franchise and newcomers alike.
