DC Universe Games Are Coming? James Gunn Confirms Talks With Rocksteady & NetherRealm
February 25, 2025The future of DC Universe games might be bigger than we imagined. DC Studios boss James Gunn has officially confirmed that his team is in active discussions with Rocksteady and NetherRealm—two of Warner Bros.’ top gaming studios—about developing new DC games. This could mean anything from an Injustice sequel to a fresh single-player superhero adventure, and fans are already speculating.
Gunn, who laid out his ambitious plan in 2023 to create a unified DC Universe across films, TV, and video games, seems to be making sure the gaming side of things doesn’t get left behind.

DC Games Could Be a Bigger Part of the DCU
At a recent DC Studios event, Gunn and his co-CEO Peter Safran confirmed that they are working closely with Warner Bros. Games. According to ComicBook, they’ve been sitting down with the heads of Rocksteady and NetherRealm to discuss potential projects.
Safran explained how this is a new level of collaboration:
“We work incredibly closely with JB Perrette, who runs that division. It’s really the first time it’s ever been this way at Warner Bros. James and I sit with the guys that run the studios under JB, whether it’s NetherRealm or Rocksteady. We sit with them and we talk about characters and stories that we’re interested in and that they’re interested in.”
Gunn further elaborated:
“We see designs for the projects in their very earliest stages. We talk about those, we talk about what the story might be and we’ll say, ‘Well, maybe you want to go this way because we’re planning on maybe doing something with this character.’”
While no specific game titles or characters have been confirmed yet, the fact that they are involved so early in the process suggests that DC Studios is serious about making games a core part of its storytelling ecosystem.
Which DC Games Could Be in Development?

With Rocksteady and NetherRealm in the mix, there are some obvious possibilities for upcoming DC Universe games.
- A Superman Game?
With DC set to release a new Superman film in 2025, could Rocksteady finally tackle the open-world Superman game fans have wanted for years? Given Rocksteady’s experience with Batman: Arkham, they would be a top contender for the job. - The Batman Returns?
Reports have already suggested that Rocksteady might be returning to Batman for a new single-player adventure, though it’s said to be “years away.” With The Batman Part 2 scheduled for 2027, the timing could line up. - Injustice 3?
NetherRealm, best known for Mortal Kombat, is also the studio behind the Injustice fighting series. The last instalment, Injustice 2, was released way back in 2017, so a long-overdue sequel could finally be on the way. - Wonder Woman’s Future
Monolith’s Wonder Woman game is already in development, though details remain scarce. Could Gunn’s vision for a connected DC Universe mean this game will tie into other projects?
DC Characters May Return to Fortnite
Beyond standalone games, DC characters could be making a comeback in Fortnite. Gunn revealed that DC is in discussions with Epic Games about new crossovers. While Superman and Batman have appeared in Fortnite before, these collaborations slowed down when Warner Bros. launched Multiversus. Now that Multiversus has been shut down, it seems Warner Bros. is reversing that decision.
If Fortnite brings back DC superheroes, it could be timed with upcoming film releases or even as a teaser for new DC games.
It’s clear that DC Studios is taking video games far more seriously than before. Instead of treating them as standalone projects, Gunn and Safran are making sure they are interwoven with the DC Universe. The biggest takeaway? DC games won’t be an afterthought anymore. With Rocksteady, NetherRealm, and Monolith all in the mix, the next few years could bring a golden era for DC video games.
Of course, we’ll have to wait a few more years before we see anything official—but if Gunn’s track record is any indication, there’s plenty to be excited about.
