Discord adds age-check options beyond video selfies and ID scans — what changes for users

Discord has begun rolling out an age-assurance system that automatically places accounts into Adult, Teen or Unconfirmed groups. For users not automatically identified as adults, the important change is that video selfies and direct ID scans are no longer the only possible routes to adult access.

Discord says more than 90% of users will not be asked to manually confirm an age group. For those who are, the choices shown can include a credit-card check, Apple App Store or Google Play age-range sharing, Google Wallet, AgeKey, a video selfie and an ID scan. However, the company is clear that the selection depends on factors including a person’s region and device, so no option is guaranteed to appear for every account. Discord’s rollout announcement says the automatic assignments started on 23 September 2026.

“So we added alternatives, including some that don’t require a video selfie or an ID.”

That description from Discord CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy needs one practical qualification: an alternative may avoid sending Discord a selfie or an ID scan in that flow, but it is not always an entirely credential-free option. Google Wallet relies on a passport already stored in Wallet, for example, while a new AgeKey can be created using a selfie, ID scan or card check.

Do you have to confirm your age to keep using Discord?

No, not for Discord’s core functions. Discord says an Unconfirmed account can still message people, make voice calls and use servers that are not age-restricted. What it cannot access are adult-only content, spaces and settings until it is confirmed as belonging to the Adult group. Discord’s support guidance puts it simply: “You don’t need to confirm your age group just to access Discord.”

That distinction is useful if you are content to continue using ordinary chats and servers. If Discord has placed you in Teen or Unconfirmed and you need an adult-only setting or space, you may need to open the in-app confirmation process and choose from the methods actually offered to your account.

The practical decision tree for avoiding a selfie or direct ID scan

Start in the Discord app, not through an email or text message. Discord says age assurance happens only inside its app, and that requests to confirm an age group by email or SMS are not from Discord. If Apple App Store or Google Play age-range sharing appears

This is the clearest route for someone who wants to avoid both a video selfie and a direct ID scan within Discord. Discord says these options share an age range with the service rather than an exact date of birth. The exact birthdate is not shared, according to its documentation.

Whether either store option appears is not something users can force. Discord says the available methods vary by region and device, so treat this as a possible choice rather than a universal setting.

If a credit-card check appears

A credit-card check is another listed alternative to a selfie or direct ID scan. It is still a financial-credential-based age check, so it will not suit everyone’s privacy preferences. Discord’s privacy documentation sets out the vendors and data handling attached to each method; users considering this route should read those details before proceeding. If Google Wallet appears

Google Wallet avoids uploading a passport directly to Discord, but it is not a no-ID route in the broad sense. Discord says this option uses a passport already stored in Google Wallet. Discord says it receives the resulting age-group outcome and the passport’s issuing country, not the passport details themselves. That may be preferable for users who already use Wallet, but it still depends on having that passport credential in place.

If you already have an AgeKey

AgeKey is designed as a reusable age credential. If you already have one, Discord says you can use it instead of repeating an age check. But creating a new AgeKey is a separate decision: Discord says setup can use a video selfie, an ID scan or a credit card. In other words, AgeKey can reduce repeat checks, but it does not automatically provide a no-selfie, no-ID path for a first-time user.

What Discord says it receives

Discord describes the overall system as age assurance rather than a demand for every user’s date of birth. Its documentation says the app-store routes share an age range rather than an exact birthday, while the Google Wallet route shares an age-group result and issuing country. Those differences matter: “Discord receives only an age signal” is too broad a description for every method because Google Wallet also provides the issuing country.

Discord also sets out its claims on vendor roles, data flows and retention in its age-assurance privacy documentation. These are company statements, rather than independently audited findings in the material published with the rollout, so users should assess them as Discord’s stated policy.

Why Discord changed course

The expanded set of choices follows criticism of Discord’s earlier global plan. In February, the company delayed that rollout after privacy backlash over a system framed around face scanning or ID uploads for people who could not be determined to be adults. The new rollout does not mean every user can select a completely document-free method, nor does it explain precisely which options are live in every market or on every platform. The most sensible approach is therefore straightforward: do nothing if you do not need adult-only access; if you do, open the confirmation screen inside the Discord app, compare the methods it presents, and choose only after checking what that particular route shares.
