Grounded 2 Into the Abyss Update: What’s New and What Returning Players Should Check
August 12, 2026Into the Abyss turns water into a full Grounded 2 survival loop with diving gear, underwater construction, an amphibious Buggy and broader fast travel.
Grounded 2’s Into the Abyss update is now available as version 0.5.0. Xbox describes it as the game’s largest update yet, but the more useful distinction is what it changes: Skunk Pond and the Abyss introduce a dedicated water-based progression loop spanning exploration, combat, travel and base building.
Returning players have three immediate priorities. Follow the Skunk Pond quest, prepare the new diving equipment before heading deeper, and inspect established bases. Obsidian warned before the update that resources could regrow through player-built structures again when 0.5 arrived. That warning does not establish that every save or base will be affected, but it is worth knowing before committing to the new area.
Where to start in Into the Abyss

The new journey begins with the Skunk Pond quest. Obsidian’s detailed 0.5.0 notes identify Skunk Pond as the newly opened quest area, while Xbox’s overview describes the deeper descent into the Abyss. The expansion also adds surrounding landmarks, caves, labs and Ranger Outposts, with the Bayou and Mountains among the additional areas highlighted by Xbox.
This is not simply an invitation to swim farther with an existing land-focused loadout. Into the Abyss adds a Diving Suit and a collection of movement, combat and utility tools intended for underwater trips. Players returning after time away should approach the pond as a new survival environment rather than a small side activity.
Water now has its own movement and combat systems
Swimming 2.0 introduces more underwater control, including agile swimming, a Burst movement option and enemy lock-on below the surface. The patch also adds the Harpoon Gun, underwater Croakwurst Bombs, flares that work underwater and the Omni-Clipper. The practical approach is to craft the relevant diving equipment, become familiar with the new movement and bring underwater tools before attempting a long trip into the Abyss. The update adds new enemies as well as equipment, so a short scouting dive may be more useful than treating the first descent as a major resource run.
Underwater bases are now a supported building option
The biggest change for builders is the ability to establish fully underwater bases. New construction options listed in the official materials include an Underwater Marine Workbench, Marine Wall Kit, Diving Bell Bed and Underwater Bubble Diffuser. Xbox also highlights Bubble Floors, which create breathable spaces inside submerged builds.
These additions allow players to establish a functional foothold underwater instead of returning to shore after every dive. An underwater staging point may be useful for groups making repeated trips into the Abyss, although the official update materials do not identify a single best location or base design.
The Toe Biter Buggy works on land and in water

Into the Abyss adds the Toe Biter, an amphibious Buggy built for routes that cross dry ground and water. According to the official 0.5.0 patch notes, it can travel on land and across the water’s surface, hop between lily pads and dive underwater. It can carry haulable objects while moving on land or along the surface.
That carrying ability should be particularly useful for construction around Skunk Pond. Rather than serving only as transportation into the new area, the Toe Biter can help move building materials along routes that alternate between land and surface water. Its ability to dive also means players do not have to abandon the Buggy as soon as a route goes below the surface.
PTS fast travel now uses a wider network
The PTS fast-travel system has also been expanded. Ranger Outpost PTS units that previously connected to only one other unit are now linked to the broader network. Each unit must still be added individually by paying a one-time Raw Science cost, according to the developer’s patch notes.
Players with an established save should review the Ranger Outposts they have reached and decide which PTS units are worth adding. Connecting useful points around the expanded region can shorten later trips for diving, gathering materials and working on underwater bases.
Returning builders should inspect bases for resource regrowth
The main caveat for established bases comes from a developer warning published with Grounded 2 patch 0.4.2 in June. Obsidian said the resource-regrowth behavior would occur again with the August 11 Into the Abyss update, meaning natural resources could regrow through player-built structures.
Obsidian also described a mitigation. When the player is standing on a crafted structure or floor, the Omni-Tool can remove a resource that has regrown through a player-built structure with one hit. This is a cleanup option, not a guarantee that existing builds will be unaffected. The developer notice does not quantify how many saves or bases could encounter the issue.
Before concentrating on Skunk Pond, check important floors, workshops and enclosed rooms in established bases. If a resource has appeared inside a build, use the Omni-Tool mitigation described by Obsidian.
O.R.C. attacks now follow a heat system
Patch 0.5.0 changes the timing of O.R.C. attacks through a new heat system. Mysterious Stranger waves no longer occur on the previous random three-to-five-day schedule. Instead, specified player actions raise heat, and reaching heat level three results in a wave the following night. The change makes the timing more predictable, but the official notes do not present it as a general reduction in attacks. Players planning a large underwater construction project should monitor their heat level and prepare for the following night after it reaches level three.
Is Into the Abyss the full Grounded 2 launch?
No. Into the Abyss is a major update, not Grounded 2’s version 1.0 release. Xbox’s official availability information continues to describe the game as being in Game Preview on Xbox and Early Access on Steam and PlayStation 5. For returning players, the sensible order is to inspect existing bases, begin the Skunk Pond quest, work toward the Diving Suit and underwater toolkit, and connect the PTS locations that will support repeat trips. The update’s defining change is not merely a larger pond: water is now a place to progress, fight, travel and build.
