Helldivers 2 Easy Anti-Cheat: What Changes for Mods and Steam Deck

Helldivers 2 Easy Anti-Cheat: What Changes for Mods and Steam Deck

October 21, 2026 Off

The live change may disrupt some mods, including cosmetic ones, but the studio says Steam Deck and Linux compatibility is unchanged.

Helldivers 2 has moved from GameGuard to Easy Anti-Cheat, or EAC, with Arrowhead Game Studios warning that the change could affect player mods. The studio has not declared all mods off limits: it says it appreciates cosmetic and non-gameplay creativity, although some cosmetic mods may now need updates from their creators.

The anti-cheat transition took place on October 20, 2026, according to Arrowhead’s official announcement. The following day, the official Devoid of Liberty 7.2.0 patch notes confirmed that EAC had been implemented alongside additional security tools intended to improve game-integrity protection.

Why Helldivers 2 replaced GameGuard

Arrowhead says its GameGuard implementation was not proving effective enough for Helldivers 2. “The implementation of GameGuard for HELLDIVERS 2 wasn’t as effective as it could have been, and in the end we decided to take another path with EAC,” the studio said in its announcement.

That is an explanation for the swap, not a promise that EAC will solve every cheating problem. Arrowhead has not said the new system will improve performance or eliminate cheating, and it says the game’s hardware requirements have not changed.

The move follows Arrowhead’s earlier explanation of why Helldivers 2 uses anti-cheat. In a linked 2024 anti-cheat statement, the studio described GameGuard as kernel-level software and pointed to the game’s peer-to-peer networking and shared Galactic War when explaining its concerns about cheating.

Are Helldivers 2 cosmetic mods banned?

No blanket ban on cosmetic mods has been announced. In its anti-cheat FAQ, Arrowhead says it appreciates cosmetic and non-gameplay mod creativity while identifying modifications that create unfair advantages or negatively affect other players as a concern.

That should not be read as a guarantee that every cosmetic mod will continue to run. Arrowhead explicitly warns that some non-malicious cosmetic mods may require creator updates following the EAC rollout. Mods that affect other players’ experience may no longer function.

“These changes mean that some mods, particularly the types that are affecting the experience of other players, may no longer function. It also means that some non-malicious cosmetic mods may require updates from their individual creators in order to keep working.”

Arrowhead Game Studios, “Changing anti-cheat in HELLDIVERS 2”

Arrowhead has not published a list of compatible mods, blocked mod frameworks or approved tools. The studio also says, “Using mods is done at your own discretion, and so we cannot determine what’s safe vs. unsafe to use.” Players therefore should not treat any unofficial compatibility list as an Arrowhead endorsement.

What mod users should do now

  • Expect possible disruption after the anti-cheat change, even if a mod is purely cosmetic.
  • Check the mod creator’s page or community channel for an EAC-compatible update.
  • Do not assume that a previously working mod is endorsed by Arrowhead or guaranteed to remain functional.
  • Be cautious with modifications that alter gameplay, provide an advantage or affect other players’ sessions.
  • Watch Arrowhead’s official support channels for future compatibility guidance. The studio has not committed to an allowlist or an officially supported modding route.

What this means for Steam Deck and Linux

For Steam Deck and Linux players, Arrowhead’s official position is straightforward: “Steam Deck and Linux compatibility remains unchanged.” The same FAQ says there are no changes to the game’s hardware requirements.

That statement does not guarantee that every configuration, overlay, accessibility tool or mod setup will behave identically after the update. It means only that Arrowhead is not presenting the anti-cheat replacement as a change to Helldivers 2’s stated Steam Deck or Linux compatibility.

Easy Anti-Cheat’s official vendor information lists Windows, Mac, Linux and Steam Deck among the service’s supported platforms. That is general vendor context rather than proof of how any particular Helldivers 2 configuration or mod will perform.

What Arrowhead has not confirmed

Several practical details remain unanswered. Arrowhead has not identified every mod category affected by EAC and the accompanying security measures. It has not announced retroactive action against players who used mods before the rollout, nor has it promised particular results for cheating, stability or performance.

The practical takeaway is therefore limited but clear: Helldivers 2 now uses Easy Anti-Cheat, some mods may need maintenance or may stop working, and Arrowhead has not described cosmetic modding as universally prohibited. Steam Deck and Linux compatibility, meanwhile, is officially unchanged.
