Minecraft Ice Caves Update: Features and Release Date Status

Minecraft’s next game drop will take players underground with Ice Caves, a new biome containing ice, calcite, ceiling icicles and softly glowing ice crystals. It will also introduce an unnamed frozen zombie variant that inflicts a freezing effect and can, in some cases, attack from range with ice balls. Mojang has not announced an exact release date.

Mojang outlined the features in its official Minecraft Live September 2026 recap, published after the Minecraft Live September 2026 broadcast. The announcement establishes the update’s main additions, but important details about availability, generation and combat remain unanswered.

What the Minecraft Ice Caves biome adds

Ice Caves will join Minecraft’s roster of underground biomes. Mojang compares the addition with environments such as dripstone, lush and sulfur caves and says the new biome will contain ice and calcite blocks alongside icicles and ice crystals.

The two new formations occupy different parts of the cave. Icicles grow naturally from the ceiling, while ice crystals grow from the ground and emit a soft light. That combination gives the biome its own visual character while providing some illumination underground.

Mojang’s written recap does not say where Ice Caves will generate, how frequently players will find them or whether icicles and ice crystals can be collected and placed elsewhere. It also does not identify additional resources or environmental hazards beyond the announced blocks and hostile mob.

How the unnamed frozen zombie attacks

The new enemy does not yet have an official in-game name. Mojang describes it only as a frozen zombie variant, so “frozen zombie” should be treated as a descriptive label rather than a final proper name.

Its announced attacks distinguish it from an ordinary zombie. A successful hit deals damage and applies a freezing effect, while some of the mobs can throw ice balls. The ranged attack means players may have to account for threats beyond close combat when exploring the new caves.

The official recap does not explain how long the freezing effect lasts, how often an ice ball can be thrown or whether the ranged ability is tied to particular spawn conditions. It also does not confirm the mob’s drops or indicate whether its mechanics are final.
