Rocksteady’s New Batman Game Is Coming—But Don’t Hold Your Breath Just Yet

Rocksteady’s New Batman Game Is Coming—But Don’t Hold Your Breath Just Yet

February 9, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Gotham’s protector might be making a comeback—but it’s going to take a while. Rocksteady Studios, the team behind the legendary Batman: Arkham series, is reportedly working on a new Batman game.

According to a Bloomberg report, Rocksteady is returning to its roots with a single-player Batman adventure after the disastrous reception of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. The bad news? This new Batman game is still years away.

If you’ve been starving for a great Batman experience, you might want to grab a Snickers—because the wait is going to be long.

Why Rocksteady Is Ditching Live Service and Returning to Single-Player

To say that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League bombed would be putting it lightly.

🚨 The game was a live-service experiment—one that no one asked for.

🚨 The gameplay felt like a generic shooter rather than a Rocksteady masterpiece.

🚨 The game’s story involved turning fan-favourite DC heroes into villains—and fans weren’t thrilled.

After years of development, it turns out people just wanted another Arkham-style Batman game. Shocking, right?

So, Rocksteady is finally listening. Rather than another co-op looter shooter, it seems like we’re getting a proper Batman experience—something closer to Arkham Asylum, Arkham City, and Arkham Knight.

What We Know About the New Batman Game

What Happened to Bruce Wayne In Arkham Knight?

While official details are scarce, the report hints at some key things:

🦇 It will be single-player. Rocksteady is shifting away from live service after the Suicide Squad mess.

🦇 It’s in early development. That means we likely won’t see a trailer or gameplay for at least a few years.

🦇 It’s set in Gotham. Come on, it’s Batman. Where else would it be?

If Rocksteady is taking its time with this game, that could actually be a good thing. The last thing we need is another rushed, broken game (cough Suicide Squad cough).

WB Games Montreal’s Role in the Batman Universe

While Rocksteady is heads-down on their new Batman game, WB Games Montreal—the team behind Gotham Knights—is also busy with other projects.

The Montreal studio is rumoured to be:

  • Helping out on the Wonder Woman game (which is also in development limbo).
  • Pitching a Game of Thrones title (because sure, why not?).

With WB Games’ track record, it’s unclear how much support Rocksteady will get from the Montreal team. But one thing’s for sure: this new Batman game won’t be a quick turnaround.

What Rocksteady Needs to Get Right This Time

Batman Arkham new game

If Rocksteady is bringing back Batman in a big way, here’s what they absolutely need to nail:

A compelling story. The Arkham trilogy was packed with great villains and emotional stakes. We need that again.

Tight combat mechanics. No gimmicky RPG mechanics, just fluid, brutal combat that makes you feel like Batman.

A polished game at launch. After Arkham Knight’s PC disaster and Suicide Squad’s failure, Rocksteady cannot afford another mess.

No unnecessary multiplayer. Seriously. Just let Batman be Batman in a solo experience.

How Long Will We Have to Wait?

Based on the Bloomberg report, this game is still years away.

That means:

Don’t expect a 2025 release. There’s no way Rocksteady is that far along yet.

2026 or later is more realistic. If development just started, a 2027 launch is even possible.

We might get a teaser sooner. But don’t expect gameplay or major reveals until late 2025 or 2026.

If you’re a Batman fan, you’ll need to hold tight. But after the missteps with Suicide Squad, it’s better to wait for a great game than rush out another disappointment.
