Sony continues to maintain strong sales of its console as the Gen 9 rolls on.
Recent data from a Take-Two Interactive earnings report, as reported by GameSpot, indicates that Sony’s PlayStation 5 has surged ahead in sales, outselling its Xbox counterpart by a considerable margin. According to the report, as of December 31, 2023, approximately 77 million Gen 9 consoles have been sold globally. Sony’s PS5 alone contributed significantly to this number, with over 50 million units sold by December 20, 2023. By contrast, Microsoft’s Xbox Series X | S is estimated to have sold around 27 million units.
This revelation sheds light on the ongoing success of Sony’s console, maintaining its dominance in the current gaming landscape. Sony previously disclosed sales figures in July of the same year, boasting 40 million units sold, while Xbox Series X | S trailed behind with just over 21 million units sold.
Both consoles were launched in November 2020, with Sony introducing a Slim model of the PS5 last year. Although Microsoft has yet to unveil a mid-gen refresh for the Xbox Series X | S, leaked documents suggest plans for future releases.
The latest Gen 9 update brings forth intriguing information considering the other speculations revolving around Xbox’s future. Several reports have emerged lately, indicating that numerous Xbox exclusives such as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, Starfield, Sea of Thieves, and Hi-Fi Rush might soon be available on competing consoles like PlayStation.
The significance of these sales figures is further highlighted by recent rumours surrounding Xbox’s strategy, particularly regarding the potential expansion of exclusive titles to rival platforms like PlayStation. Xbox head Phil Spencer has acknowledged these concerns and promised to address them in an upcoming business update.
