Resident Evil Requiem’s $500M estimate: what the sales and movie data show

Resident Evil Requiem’s $500M estimate: what the sales and movie data show

September 26, 2026 Off

Alinea Analytics estimates Resident Evil Requiem has passed $500 million, but its 8.5 million tracked-player figure is not the same as confirmed unit sales.

By Ibraheem Adeola

Alinea Analytics estimates that Resident Evil Requiem has passed $500 million in revenue, but that is not a financial disclosure from Capcom. The analyst’s related figure of 8.5 million tracked players also differs from Capcom’s official statement that the game has surpassed 8 million cumulative unit sales.

Those numbers should not be combined or treated as interchangeable. Capcom has confirmed a unit-sales milestone, while Alinea is presenting modeled revenue and player estimates. Its analysis also suggests that a September discount had more effect on Requiem’s recent revenue than the opening of Sony Pictures’ new Resident Evil film.

What the Resident Evil Requiem figures mean

In its September 25 analysis, Alinea said Requiem had “just passed $500M.” The figure comes from the firm’s tracked data and modeling. Capcom has not published a corresponding Requiem revenue total.

Capcom’s latest business-performance update says cumulative sales of Resident Evil Requiem have surpassed 8 million units. Its official Platinum Titles database lists the game at 8.00 million units.

Alinea, meanwhile, says PlayStation represents 48.1% of its 8.5 million tracked players and separately refers to more than 4 million PS5 copies. That wording matters: a tracked-player total is not automatically equivalent to copies sold, especially without public details about cross-platform users, deduplication or how every platform is represented in the estimate.

The figures therefore answer different questions rather than forming a clean contradiction. Capcom’s number is the publisher’s confirmed cumulative unit total. Alinea’s 8.5 million figure is an estimate of tracked players across platforms, and its $500 million figure is an analyst revenue estimate.

A major film opening did not translate neatly into Requiem revenue

Sony Pictures’ new Resident Evil film opened in theaters on September 18, 2026. It was a substantial box-office event: the Associated Press reported a $60 million opening in the United States and Canada and $48.3 million internationally, producing a $108.3 million worldwide launch.

Alinea’s narrower conclusion is that the film did not add much to Requiem’s near-full-price revenue during the period it examined. According to the firm, Capcom’s discount began on September 10. That allowed Alinea to compare September 10 through 17, when the discount was active but the film had not opened, with September 19 through 24, when the same pricing and the theatrical release overlapped.

In Alinea’s PS5 estimates, Requiem’s average daily revenue fell from approximately $284,000 in the first period to $271,000 in the second, a decline of about 4%. Alinea said the lower price increased copy volume, but its interpretation is that the discount accounted for most of the revenue movement.

“Discounts did most of the work, but the movie has contributed”

Rhys Elliott, Alinea Analytics

That is not the same as finding that the film had no effect on the Resident Evil franchise. Alinea reported stronger engagement and activity around older games. Its more limited assessment is that the movie’s opening did not produce a meaningful additional lift in Requiem revenue after it compared the two discounted periods.

Why the movie effect is still an analyst estimate

The timing makes Alinea’s comparison useful. Because the discount began eight days before the film opened, the firm could examine a discount-only period separately from a period in which the discount and film release overlapped.

Even so, the conclusion about the movie’s effect remains Alinea’s modeled interpretation. It has not been independently confirmed by Capcom, Sony or the platform holders, and the underlying daily platform revenue and sales figures are not public disclosures. Capcom also has not said whether the September promotion was planned around the film or what portion of any sales change it attributes to the theatrical release.

The clearest reading is therefore that Capcom has confirmed more than 8 million cumulative units for Resident Evil Requiem, while Alinea estimates more than $500 million in revenue and 8.5 million tracked players. Alinea’s analysis further indicates that the game’s recent revenue movement was driven mainly by discounting rather than a new wave of near-full-price spending tied directly to the film’s opening.
