Beyond Good and Evil 2 Survives Ubisoft Restructuring; Remains a “Unique Proposition” in Open World Adventure Games

Beyond Good and Evil 2 Survives Ubisoft Restructuring; Remains a “Unique Proposition” in Open World Adventure Games

January 24, 2026 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Despite a sweeping organisational reset that closed two studios and delayed seven projects, Ubisoft has reaffirmed that Beyond Good and Evil 2 is still in active development, calling it a “unique proposition” within the open world adventure genre.

Ubisoft announced in January 2026 that Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains a priority in its portfolio, even as the publisher undergoes major structural changes. First announced in 2008, the long-awaited sequel managed to escape cancellation and remains on Ubisoft’s roadmap, while multiple unnamed games and at least one high-profile remake, the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, were not as fortunate.

Beyond Good and Evil 2: Current Status and Unique Position

On 23 January 2026, Ubisoft provided an update via a statement shared with Eurogamer:

“Beyond Good and Evil 2 remains part of our portfolio and our roadmap and fits with our strategy of focusing on Open World Adventures.”

According to Ubisoft, there is a significant market opportunity in the fantasy open-world genre. The spokesperson stated:

“The fantasy genre is underserved. Therefore, Ubisoft has a unique proposition with its Beyond Good and Evil sequel.”

Originally unveiled in 2008, the game was last seen publicly at E3 2017, where Ubisoft showcased its ambitions for a sprawling open-world adventure. Development has faced considerable turbulence over the years. Michel Ancel, the game’s original creator, previously commented that much of the troubled development stemmed from “passionate managers not getting along.”

Despite its protracted cycle, Ubisoft has shown recent signs of commitment to Beyond Good and Evil 2:

  • 2024: Ubisoft recruited a new creative director for Beyond Good and Evil 2, suggesting fresh leadership and renewed focus on the project.
  • 2025: A public job listing sought a technical sound designer specifically for the game, indicating ongoing active development and expansion of the core team.

An updated official description released by Ubisoft describes the title as follows:

“Beyond Good and Evil 2 is an action-adventure open world game set in a captivating space opera universe and the direct prequel to the 2003 cult classic. Based on a breakthrough technology driven by the proprietary Voyager engine, Beyond Good and Evil 2 aims to offer a seamless experience of exploration and space piracy across a solar system full of exotic locations, colourful characters and mysteries to uncover, solo or with friends. So, if you are ready for an adventure like no other, come join forces with us to build System 3!”

Ubisoft’s Wider Studio Strategy and Portfolio Changes

Earlier in the week, Ubisoft initiated a “major organisational, operational and portfolio reset” in response to internal and market demands. Key details include:

  • Seven unspecified projects are delayed
  • Two studio closures
  • Multiple games cancelled

Among the cancelled titles is the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake, which was reportedly only months away from release. According to the development team, this decision has been “deeply disappointing” for both staff and fans. However, Ubisoft has indicated it is not fully withdrawing from the Prince of Persia franchise.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 has long been considered one of the most ambitious projects in Ubisoft’s catalogue. Its survival through significant cancellations and strategic pivots cements its value to Ubisoft’s evolving strategy. With Ubisoft’s stated commitment to open-world adventure titles and the “underserved” nature of the fantasy genre, the sequel now represents both a creative risk and a statement of intent from the publisher amid substantial internal change.
