Nintendo Switch Online Adds Five More Virtual Boy Games, Now Covers Most of Console’s Library
May 16, 2026Nintendo has expanded its Switch Online + Expansion Pack service with five more Virtual Boy games, bringing the total to 12 out of the system’s 22 official releases, and users require a physical Virtual Boy accessory to play. This marks the largest public reissue of the rare 1990s library, with Nintendo confirming up to 16 Virtual Boy titles are planned for the service.
On 14 May 2026, Nintendo launched five additional Virtual Boy games for Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers: V-Tetris, Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, and Vertical Force. As announced, “From today, users with the physical Virtual Boy accessory will be able to play V-Tetris, Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, and Vertical Force.” In Japan, the service also added a sixth title, Virtual Fishing, making the Japanese NSO lineup slightly larger than in Western territories.
Comprehensive Virtual Boy Support on Switch Online
With this update, the Western edition of Nintendo Switch Online now offers 12 Virtual Boy games, nearly doubling the library since the NSO Virtual Boy launch in February 2026. According to Nintendo, “a total of 16 Virtual Boy games [are] planned for release on NSO, including Mario Clash and Mario’s Tennis.” Of the 22 official games released for the Virtual Boy console in the 1990s, the current and announced NSO catalogue will soon represent the large majority.
Planned and confirmed titles for NSO Virtual Boy (as of May 2026):
- Available now (Western regions): 12 titles, including V-Tetris, Jack Bros., Space Invaders Virtual Collection, Virtual Bowling, Vertical Force, and launch titles (not all listed in the source).
- Confirmed upcoming titles: Mario Clash, Mario’s Tennis, Zero Racer (previously unreleased), D-Hopper (previously unreleased).
- Japan-exclusive (so far): Virtual Fishing.
- Yet to be confirmed for NSO: Nester’s Funky Bowling, Panic Bomber, SD Gundam Dimension War, Space Squash, Virtual Fighting, Virtual Lab, Virtual League Baseball, Waterworld.
Physical Accessory Requirement and Pricing
Playing Virtual Boy games on NSO requires purchase of a physical accessory. As stated: “In order to play Virtual Boy NSO games, users need to buy a physical Virtual Boy accessory, which can be purchased from the My Nintendo Store. The main Virtual Boy accessory, which is a replica of the actual console, costs $100 / £67, while a sturdy cardboard viewer is available as a cheaper alternative for $25 / £17.” These accessories are required for compatibility and to replicate the 3D effect of the original hardware.
The decision to distribute most of the Virtual Boy’s rare and region-locked catalogue is significant. Only 22 titles were ever released on the console before it was discontinued, and Nintendo’s current NSO roadmap demonstrates the largest legal reissue of Virtual Boy games to date. Some remaining titles are unlikely to appear due to “licensed IPs,” making their potential for NSO release slim, especially for games such as Panic Bomber and Waterworld.
Officially Unconfirmed for NSO Virtual Boy (May 2026):
- Nester’s Funky Bowling
- Panic Bomber*
- SD Gundam Dimension War*
- Space Squash
- Virtual Fighting
- Virtual Lab
- Virtual League Baseball*
- Waterworld*
- *Titles with licensed IPs, making them “unlikely to appear in the future.”
At the time of writing, “players will have the majority of the Virtual Boy library once the remaining nine games are released.” The two previously unreleased games, Zero Racer and D-Hopper, are still anticipated. This initiative ensures Switch Online + Expansion Pack remains the first legal way most players can access Virtual Boy software since the 1990s, further solidifying Nintendo’s service as a key portal for gaming preservation and retro enthusiasts.
