Modern Warfare 4 Revealed: Call of Duty Skips PS4 as Korea Campaign and Nintendo Switch 2 Release Confirmed

May 30, 2026 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 launches worldwide on 23 October 2026 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, making it the first Modern Warfare to bypass PS4 and Xbox One and the first to appear on Switch hardware. Infinity Ward, supported by Beenox and Digital Legends, leads development for a campaign set in modern Korea, featuring new gunplay systems and a controversial storyline.

Activision has officially announced that Modern Warfare 4 will be released exclusively for current-generation platforms, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2, on Friday, 23 October 2026. This marks a pivotal shift for the franchise, as the series will not be launching on older consoles (PS4, Xbox One) for the first time. In a globally streamed announcement, developer Infinity Ward described the game as “a new technical benchmark”, built specifically for the latest consoles and PC.

New Campaign: A Divisive Korean War Narrative

The Modern Warfare 4 campaign unfolds in modern-day South Korea. According to Activision, the fictional supreme leader of North Korea launches a full-scale invasion, sparking a peninsula-wide conflict. The official synopsis reads: “A full-scale invasion erupts in a new theater of war, on the Korean Peninsula, igniting a rapidly escalating crisis unlike anything the franchise has tackled before.” The narrative, described as “ripped-from-the-headlines”, explores themes of political tension, shadow operations, and foreign interference.

Players assume the role of Private Park, a young Korean soldier thrust into frontline combat for the first time. The campaign is cast as a “zero-to-hero journey”, with Park and squad overcoming overwhelming odds. Series mainstay Captain Price returns, this time forming “a rogue alliance, operating outside the system and apart from the Task Force 141 team he once called his own.”

The campaign will include missions set not only across the Korean peninsula but also in New York, Paris, and Mumbai. Multiple sources, including VGC and The Guardian’s Tom Regan, have reported that the Korean conflict narrative may prove controversial in the region. As relayed by a Korean journalist to The Guardian, a story depicting open warfare on the peninsula “may prove divisive in the region.”

Multiplayer and DMZ: Technical Overhauls and New Modes

The multiplayer suite launches with 12 core 6v6 maps on day one, plus Gunfight and Big War maps designed for vehicle and infantry combat. Activision revealed Kill Block, a “dynamic battleground with more than 500 configurations that reshape routes, sightlines, and cover to keep players adapting round after round.”

Modern Warfare 4 debuts ‘Ballistic Authority’, a new gunplay technology unifying “precision aiming, physical handling, realistic audio propagation, enhanced visibility, and smarter combat perception into the most authentic Modern Warfare gunplay yet.” According to Infinity Ward, “Bullet trajectory, weapon motion, Operator stance, camera, audio, FOV, and target visibility all line up in one highly tuned combat fidelity system. The promise is simple: no bloom, no guesswork, and no doubt. Every shot tells the truth.”

A newly introduced Gunny System will allow players to rapidly assemble weapon builds based on their playstyle and unlocked attachments. For progression, the game will offer two Prestige paths, Classic Prestige and Regular Prestige. Activision elaborates: “Classic Prestige delivers the traditional reset experience, relocking Create-a-Class progression in exchange for increased XP earn rates and access to exclusive Prestige rewards.”

The DMZ mode returns with a dynamic weather system. As detailed by Activision, “With a living world, the conditions in the exclusion zone are always shifting, with changing weather, dynamic military objectives, and hostile forces moving throughout the zone.”
