Marvel’s Wolverine Confirms No X-Men Team, Brutal Tone, and Only Easter Egg Spider-Man Cameos
June 4, 2026Insomniac Games has confirmed that there are no X-Men in Marvel’s Wolverine for PlayStation 5, with Spider-Man limited to brief, ‘Easter-eggy’ cameo moments rather than any crossover, as the studio focuses on a blood-soaked, standalone Logan narrative set before mutant-kind becomes public knowledge.
During interviews following the PlayStation State of Play showcase on 3 June 2026, Insomniac Games creative director Marcus Smith stated unequivocally: “The important thing, I guess, is the X-Men don’t exist in our game. We wanted to focus on a Wolverine storyline and really build it from that character and build a world that is in a state where mutants aren’t well known.” Smith elaborated that while mutants do exist in the game’s world, “they’re falling victim to people who do know about them and want to destroy them.”
Logan’s Team and Key Marvel Characters in the Storyline
At the start of Marvel’s Wolverine, Logan is part of Team X—not the X-Men—and teams up with Sabretooth, with whom he shares a traditionally antagonistic relationship. “At the very beginning of the game, Logan actually belongs on a team called Team X, and he has teamed up with Sabretooth, who you see in the gameplay trailer. But there are no X-Men,” Smith confirmed.
The core roster of Marvel characters revealed so far includes:
- Sabretooth – Logan’s rival and Team X partner.
- Mystique – Appears in an earlier trailer and will interact with Logan in gameplay.
- Jean Grey – Shown aiding Logan in combat in the official gameplay reveal.
Smith stated, “There will be a lot of Marvel characters that come into the storyline; so we’ve already shown Mystique in the earlier trailer, we’ve shown Sabretooth, Jean Grey in this one, and players can expect to have a lot more throughout the game.”
Spider-Man’s Role: Only an Easter Egg
Asked if Insomniac’s widely popular Marvel’s Spider-Man will tie into Wolverine, Smith clarified: “They do exist in the same universe and there will be some Easter-eggy sort of overlap, but there is no crossover between Spider-Man and Wolverine.” Spider-Man fans should not expect any direct interaction or plot involvement between the two heroes.
Combat System: Jean Grey, Mystique, and Sabretooth as Allies

Jean Grey plays an active role in combat, using her telekinetic powers to both assist Logan and engage enemies independently. In yesterday’s gameplay trailer, Jean suspends foes telekinetically, creating opportunities for Wolverine’s brutal takedowns.
The game’s director Mike Daly explained:
“(Jean Grey) assists in enabling takedowns, and this ability to manipulate the battlefield around Wolverine makes her an ‘important supplement’ to manage enemies. Even outside of these moments, though, she’s a capable combatant who can defend herself and take out enemies independently on the battlefield, and as you go through the course of the game, Logan and Jean will team up more times. In stealth, in particular, you’ll be able to take advantage of some coordination between the two of you, using her telepathy to influence enemies.”
This “mechanical buddying” extends to other supporting characters:
- Mystique – Expected to bring unique abilities and tactics to team-based encounters.
- Sabretooth – Features contentious, competitive gameplay dynamics and unique banter.
Daly detailed Sabretooth’s dynamic: “Logan and Sabretooth always have a little bit of a contentious relationship, and that manifests in combat, in their banter, if you pay attention to it. It is fun to see them playing off of each other. It’s almost a competitive spirit. Jean might use her telekinesis to open up an enemy to help you take them down [but] when you’re fighting with Sabretooth, it’s more like you thought you got the kill and he snatches it right out of your hands just to deny you the pleasure. It is a different dynamic.”
Tone, Violence, and Release Information

Marvel’s Wolverine continues Insomniac’s trend of meticulous character-driven action, but departs sharply in tone by embracing violence faithful to the Wolverine comics. The showcase trailer highlighted extreme gore, vicious finishing moves, and a level of brutality described as more aligned with Mortal Kombat than previous Marvel games. As Smith and Daly confirmed, this approach is intentional: “Marvel’s Wolverine has to be gory to be true to the comic book character.”
Marvel’s Wolverine will be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 on 15th September 2026.
