Michael Jackson and Shiny Entertainment Planned Ambitious ‘Dark Rim’ Game with Exclusive Album, Says Studio Founder
June 4, 2026Pop legend Michael Jackson nearly collaborated with Shiny Entertainment—the studio behind Enter the Matrix—on a never-released third-person action game called Dark Rim, which would have featured an exclusive new album recorded for the project, according to studio founder David Perry.
New details from David Perry, founder of Shiny Entertainment, reveal that Michael Jackson was in direct talks to develop an original video game titled Dark Rim in the early 2000s. The game concept, a serious and cinematic third-person action-adventure, would have included an entirely new soundtrack composed by Jackson, aiming to introduce his global fanbase to video gaming for the first time. The collaboration never came to fruition due to “life taking its turn,” as Perry puts it, after Jackson’s public and legal controversies during that period.
How ‘Dark Rim’ Began: Jackson’s Interest in The Matrix and Video Games
Perry recounted: “I first met Jackson while the studio was working on Enter the Matrix. Perry received a call from Jackson’s Neverland Ranch, explaining that he was a huge fan of The Matrix and was wondering if it was possible for him to play Enter the Matrix before it was released.” Perry travelled to Neverland Ranch to personally demo the game for Jackson, leading to a memorable incident: “During which an impromptu egg fight broke out and he nearly hit Jackson’s son in the face with an egg,” according to Perry’s own account.
Following this meeting, Michael Jackson invited both Perry and game writer David Freeman back to Neverland to brainstorm a new game. Perry emphasised, “The obvious version would have been Michael Jackson: The Game, where you play as Michael, dance, perform, maybe fight bad guys with music. But that was not the interesting version. Michael had already done Moonwalker. We wanted something bigger and more surprising.”
Instead, their vision shifted dramatically: “Instead, the trio came up with a ‘serious, cinematic, third-person action-adventure game’ where Jackson would not be the main character, but would instead offer ‘original music, imagination, access to the worlds of film and celebrity, and his unique sense of wonder’,” as Perry describes.
Inside the Ambitious Design of Dark Rim

Perry revealed several internal titles for the project, with ‘Dark Rim’ emerging as its final working name. The game’s narrative underwent significant evolution. According to Perry, “The game started off as ‘a fantasy action-adventure about kingdoms, war, magic, and a hero caught between different versions of the truth’, before evolving into ‘something darker and more psychological—dreams, depression, consciousness, and a hidden realm beyond sleep.’”
Key gameplay mechanics discussed included remote possession:
- “One of the recurring gameplay ideas was remote possession. You might fly over a battlefield through the eyes of an eagle, then transfer your spirit into another character and control them.”
- “You might possess an enemy to open a gate, or take over a creature and turn it against its master. The idea was not just to give the player weapons, but to give them powers that changed how they thought about space, identity, and control.”
The proposed world was rich with magical realism and ambitious mechanics: “There were gifted children in villages who could teach you unique abilities. There were battles that were not just fights, but wars already in motion when you arrived. There were villains manipulating kingdoms from behind a veil. There were ideas about illusion, sound, magic, and the mind. It was ambitious. Maybe too ambitious. But that was the point.”
Perry’s team at Shiny Entertainment had previous experience with such mechanics, having explored possession in the 2010 title Messiah. He noted, “The idea of possessing multiple characters in a game had already been explored in Shiny’s Messiah.”
Michael Jackson’s Vision: Music and Gaming Fusion
Michael Jackson’s proposed involvement went far beyond a standard cameo or endorsement. Perry explains, “The plan was also to have Jackson create an entirely new album’s worth of music and make it exclusive to the game, in an attempt to encourage more of his fans to play video games for the first time.”
He elaborated on the unprecedented marketing approach: “At the time, games were already enormous, but there were still millions of people who did not really understand them. They thought games were for someone else, for kids, or teenagers, or ‘gamers’. But Michael’s audience was global. It crossed generations, countries, and cultures. If the only way to hear his next album was to play a video game, then a huge number of people would play a video game for the first time. We discussed that his record company would initially freak out, until they heard that a deluxe album would follow the game release.”
Jackson’s appreciation for games was long-standing. He previously collaborated with Sega on the Moonwalker game series and contributed music to Sonic 3.
Why Dark Rim Was Never Released
Despite an impressive concept and Jackson’s enthusiasm, Dark Rim was ultimately shelved. Perry points only to the timing, saying, “Life took its turn.” This coincided with a turbulent period for Jackson including the airing of Martin Bashir’s controversial “Living with Michael Jackson” documentary in early 2003 and the serious legal allegations that followed months later. Enter the Matrix released in May 2003, making the window for development increasingly challenging.
Reflecting on the project’s cancellation, Perry wrote, “Sometimes the projects that never ship still leave a mark. This one certainly did for me. It reminded me that the best creative ideas often begin as a slightly insane question—what if the only way to hear Michael Jackson’s next album was to play a video game? And for one brief moment at Neverland, that did not sound insane at all. It sounded possible.”
