Sony to Permanently Close PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita by July 2027
July 2, 2026Sony has confirmed it will permanently shut down the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita globally by July 2027, starting with Latin American and Middle Eastern markets in August 2026. After closure, new digital content sales will end, but users can still re-download previous purchases for the foreseeable future.
Sony has officially announced the timeline for the closure of the PlayStation Store on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita, marking the end of digital sales for both legacy platforms. According to Sony, “After nearly two decades of supporting the PS3 console generation, we wanted to let you know we will be closing the PlayStation Store on PS3, as well as on PS Vita.” The company detailed a staggered shutdown: the PlayStation Store will discontinue operations first in Mexico, Honduras, and Nicaragua in August 2026, with remaining Latin American and Middle Eastern countries following later that year.
By July 2027, all other global regions will lose PlayStation Store access for PS3 and PS Vita. Sony emphasised, “PlayStation Store on PS3 will close in select markets starting this year, followed by global closures for PS3 and PS Vita next year. That means new content purchases will no longer be possible once the PlayStation Store closes on these devices.” This move impacts purchases of digital games, DLC, and other content directly from the devices’ online storefronts.
While the PlayStation Store’s ability to process new sales will end, Sony has taken steps to help players transition. “To ease the transition, players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future.” This means that although you won’t be able to buy new titles, any games already added to your account library will remain accessible for download, preserving existing investments for the time being.

These closures are attributed to evolving commerce and payment standards that PS3 and PS Vita can no longer support. Sony explained, “As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required.” With resources dedicated to current and next-generation PlayStation hardware, Sony is refocusing its support efforts, stating, “As we continue to expand the PlayStation experience on newer devices that most of our users are playing on today, we need to focus more resources on delivering the best gaming experiences on these platforms as we look ahead towards the future.”
The company openly acknowledged the significance of this legacy era, writing, “We know this news may be disappointing to PS3 and PS Vita players who hold a special place in their hearts for this generation of gaming. PS3 and PS Vita represent an important era in our PlayStation history, so this was not an easy decision for us to make.”
This is not Sony’s first attempt at shuttering the PS3 and PS Vita digital storefronts. In 2021, Sony announced plans to close the PS3, PS Vita, and PSP stores, but faced intense backlash from fans. As a result, Sony reversed course on PS3 and PS Vita, though the PSP store closed as initially scheduled on 2 July 2021.
At the time, then-SIE president Jim Ryan publicly addressed the controversy: “Upon further reflection, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here.” Sony’s reversal allowed PS3 and PS Vita digital sales to continue for several more years, but the newly announced timeline leaves fans with just over a year before access shuts down.
- PS3 PlayStation Store Closures Begin: August 2026 in Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua
- Further Closures: Late 2026 in additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries
- Global Store Access Ends: July 2027 for all remaining regions
- New Purchases: No longer available after local closure date
- Re-downloads of Purchased Content: Supported after closure “for the foreseeable future”
- Payment Standards: Legacy systems no longer meet updated requirements
- Last PSP Store Closure: 2 July 2021
Sony’s decision impacts preservation efforts for digital-only games on PS3 and PS Vita, a recurring concern among collectors and digital rights advocates. While downloadable content remains available for now, there is no long-term guarantee.
Sony says it is “expanding the PlayStation experience on newer devices” as it reallocates its resources. For players who wish to maintain digital access, it is advisable to purchase any remaining wanted content before local deadlines.
