Sony has confirmed that PlayStation will discontinue all physical disc games starting January 2028, with all new releases going digital-only on PlayStation Store and at retailers. Games already released or due out before that date will still be available on discs, but any new PlayStation titles, including likely PlayStation 6 launches, will be digital exclusive.

Sony announced on 1 July 2026 that it will cease production of physical game discs for PlayStation consoles from January 2028, marking a definitive end to disc-based games on its platforms. “As consumer preferences and the broader entertainment industry continue to shift away from physical discs to digital, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting January 2028,” Sony stated. The company confirmed that after this point, all new games from every publisher will be sold exclusively as downloads via the PlayStation Store or digital codes at retailers.

This move follows major shifts in the video game industry, with digital sales already comprising the overwhelming majority of PlayStation game purchases. In the business year ending April 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment reported that 78% of all PlayStation full-game sales were digital downloads, a huge increase from just 13% digital share in 2013 when PlayStation 4 launched with full game download capability (Ampere Analysis).

This digital transition coincides with the broader trend in console hardware. Sony’s PlayStation 5 was the company’s first home system to debut a digital-only variant, and in 2023, a revised PS5 was released without a standard disc drive. Users could purchase a drive separately if needed. According to Circana data, by May 2026, 27% of PlayStation 5 consoles sold in the US lack a disc drive, compared to 52% of Xbox Series consoles.

The confirmed move is expected to be replicated in Sony’s next-generation hardware. With the 2028 date in place, analysts suggest the PlayStation 6 is “almost guaranteed” to launch after this deadline and will not support new game discs.

Concerns over game preservation are amplifying, especially as news of PlayStation Store closures for PS3 and PS Vita coincided with the digital-only plan. When asked about digital permanence, a Sony spokesperson told Game File, “With all digital content, including games, movies, and music, players are purchasing a personal license for non-commercial use.” Asked about legacy content, the spokesperson added, “Sony remains committed to delivering experiences from past generations to the new platforms our players are using.”

From an industry cost perspective, Sony stands to benefit as digital eliminates manufacturing and logistics expenses. Piers Harding-Rolls of Ampere Analysis said, “If there is a way to streamline the business of games retail, I generally think it’s a good thing for the industry as it removes unnecessary costs. This will help offset pressure on margins from other directions – development and staffing costs for example.”

At the same time, not all voices see the move as purely positive. Daniel Ahmad of Nico Partners commented, “The decision to stop physical disc production at this point is entirely a platform-led decision that is designed to cut costs for Sony, eliminate resale / used markets, and drive 100% of revenue through the PlayStation Store.” The elimination of used games is a particular blow to secondary markets and retailers reliant on trade-ins and pre-owned sales, like eBay and CEX, as well as physical retail chains.

The pressures faced by retailers are compounded by changing strategies from major publishers, exemplified by Rockstar’s decision to release Grand Theft Auto 6 digitally only, with boxed physical copies containing a download code but no disc. Chris Dring of The Game Business told VGC, “The big losers would be games retailers, plus second-hand outlets like eBay and CEX. They’ll need to focus on the secondary opportunities, like add-on items and hardware). The winners are the PlayStation and Xbox stores.”

Sony’s data and industry analysis not only confirm the steady march toward digital, but also make PlayStation the first major console platform to set an unequivocal, fixed end date for physical game releases. The move will reshape how consumers buy, own, and preserve PlayStation games well into the next console generation.
