Quake’s 30th-anniversary update is more than a commemorative extra.

Quake: Dawn of the Machine is available now as a free update for Quake owners on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Released August 6, 2026, the 30th-anniversary addition is a substantial new official episode rather than a cosmetic celebration, bringing a 19-map campaign from MachineGames in collaboration with id Software.

Bethesda’s PlayStation Blog announcement confirms that the update also includes a new soundtrack and a new Deathmatch map. For returning players, the important point is that this is a complete campaign built around new encounters and level design, not a small challenge map pack or a trailer-only anniversary reveal.

What Dawn of the Machine adds to Quake

MachineGames designed Dawn of the Machine as one continuous episode with continuous progression. That distinguishes it from the studio’s earlier Quake episodes, which reset player progress between major hub areas. Here, the structure supports a sustained journey through the campaign rather than a series of separate resets.

The episode sends the Ranger into an illusory dimension where nothing can be trusted. Explaining the project’s tonal goal in the official PlayStation Blog feature, MachineGames Lead Level Designer Andrew Yoder said, “We wanted to create something that felt authentic to the spirit of the original game: Horror! Action! Madness!”

Its combat additions include the ricochet-blasting Laser Cannon and lightning-infused Super Axe. MachineGames has also altered familiar threats with variants including the Rocket Ogre, Demo Dog and Blood Shambler. Together, those additions give the campaign ways to vary Quake’s established combat without abandoning its underlying style.

Quake: Dawn of the Machine Launch Trailer

There is more than the campaign

Alongside the 19-map campaign, PC Gamer reports that the update includes archival material from Quake’s development, including unfinished playable levels created early in development. Bethesda’s retrieved PlayStation announcement does not itemize that archive, so this remains independently attributed reporting rather than a complete official contents list.

The new Deathmatch map is confirmed by Bethesda, although the available announcement does not provide its formal name or further multiplayer details. The retrieved material also does not directly verify matchmaking, cross-play, accessibility changes or a specific patch-build number.

Where can Quake owners play Dawn of the Machine?

PlayStation has clear, directly retrieved confirmation: Dawn of the Machine became available as a free update for Quake on PS5 and PS4 on August 6. Quake owners on either console can therefore treat the episode as available now.

An official Xbox Wire launch post also exists, but the retrieved page did not expose enough body text to support precise Xbox console, storefront or subscription claims. The official Steam update-notes page likewise could not be retrieved in a usable form. TheDashDouble is therefore not presenting a broader platform list—or claims about GOG or Epic Games Store availability—as verified fact.

Players using other platforms or storefronts should check the update information attached to their own copy of Quake until accessible official release notes confirm the full rollout. For more releases and updates in the genre, see our first-person shooter coverage.
