Cult of the Lamb Switch 2 free upgrade: What’s confirmed

October 18, 2026 Off

Physical-copy eligibility, save transfers, DLC treatment and technical improvements have not yet been detailed.

By Ibraheem Adeola

Cult of the Lamb is scheduled to launch for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026, with a free upgrade announced for people who already own the game on the original Switch. The date and upgrade offer are confirmed, but the announcement leaves several practical questions about eligible purchases, saves, DLC and technical improvements unanswered.

The official Cult of the Lamb account announced the release on X, with the statement also reproduced by Nintendo Life. It says first-time Switch 2 buyers will pay the same amount as buyers of the Switch 1 version, although the announcement does not provide a specific regional price.

What is confirmed about the Switch 2 upgrade

  • The Nintendo Switch 2 version is scheduled for October 22, 2026.
  • People who already own Cult of the Lamb on Switch 1 are promised a free upgrade.
  • New buyers will pay the same amount as for the Switch 1 version.

The official account’s statement, as reproduced by Nintendo Life, reads:

“CULT OF THE LAMB comes to NINTENDO SWITCH 2 on OCTOBER 22ND! Cultists that already own COTL on Switch 1 can upgrade for FREE, while those that don’t will have to pay the price. That price being the same amount as the Switch 1 version.”

Cult of the Lamb is developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, according to Nintendo’s current store listing.

Physical and digital upgrade eligibility is still unclear

The promise applies broadly to people who already own the Switch 1 game, but the reviewed announcement does not explain whether that includes digital purchases, physical cartridges or both. It also does not describe the redemption process or say whether Nintendo will provide a separate Switch 2 store listing or upgrade download.

Owners of physical copies should therefore not assume that inserting a Switch cartridge will automatically unlock the new version. Equally, nothing in the reviewed material says that cartridge owners are excluded. The exact eligibility and redemption terms remain unconfirmed.

Save transfers and DLC have not been detailed

The reviewed announcement does not specify whether an existing Switch save will work with the Switch 2 version, whether a manual transfer will be required or whether cloud-save support will operate in the same way.

DLC treatment is also unresolved. The reviewed materials do not say whether previously purchased DLC will carry over or whether any DLC will be bundled with the Switch 2 release. Reporting on the announcement similarly noted the absence of technical, DLC and physical-copy details.

No Switch 2 performance improvements are confirmed yet

Nintendo currently lists the existing Switch edition as supported on Switch 2 and says its behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch. That describes backward compatibility for the current Switch release; it is not a feature list for the version arriving on October 22.

The announcement and storefront material reviewed for this update do not confirm a higher frame rate, increased resolution, faster loading, visual improvements, stability changes or Switch 2-specific controls. Until Massive Monster or Nintendo publishes a technical breakdown, none of those possible improvements should be treated as confirmed.

For existing owners, the immediate answer is that a free Switch 2 upgrade has been announced for October 22, 2026. Anyone relying on a physical cartridge, an existing save file or previously purchased DLC should wait for the full upgrade terms before assuming how those items will work with the new version.
