Coral Island Switch 2 coming winter 2026; original Switch version cancelled
October 18, 2026Eligible Switch-reward backers can request a no-cost Switch 2 key or select another supported platform.
Coral Island is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in winter 2026, but it will not be released for the original Nintendo Switch. Developer Stairway Games announced the platform change alongside version 1.4, the “Kids Grow Up” update, which is scheduled to arrive at the same time. No exact release date has been announced.
For players waiting to run the tropical farming sim on Nintendo hardware, the distinction matters: this is a new Switch 2 release, not a delayed original-Switch port. Stairway has announced a replacement-key option for eligible Kickstarter backers, but it has not announced a general Switch 2 upgrade programme for other players.
Coral Island’s Switch 2 release window is winter 2026
Stairway has given Coral Island a winter 2026 window on Switch 2. In its official announcement, the Stairway Team explained why the original Nintendo Switch version will not proceed:
“Due to strict platform and performance limitations, we unfortunately won’t be able to bring Coral Island to Nintendo Switch as we’d originally hoped.”
The developer has not provided a specific day or a narrower launch period. It said, “We’ll announce the exact release date closer to launch.” A precise Coral Island Switch 2 release date should therefore be treated as unconfirmed until Stairway publishes one.
What Coral Island update 1.4 adds
The Switch 2 edition will arrive alongside Coral Island version 1.4, titled “Kids Grow Up.” Its main feature is expanded progression for player children, who will be able to move through baby, toddler, school-age and teenager stages. Starlet Town’s existing child characters, including Archie, will also grow into teenagers.
Stairway’s version 1.4 overview also lists recipe filters for the cooking interface, unlockable fishing bobbers, lighting enhancements and other quality-of-life changes. Controller vibration support is planned, with HD Rumble specifically named for Switch 2.
The update is not exclusive to Switch 2. In an official press release, Stairway Games and Balor Games described version 1.4 as a free update for players on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S and said it will launch on those platforms at the same time as the Switch 2 release.
What the cancellation means for original Switch backers
Stairway has offered a specific remedy to backers whose pledge reward was a Nintendo Switch copy. According to the developer’s announcement, eligible backers can choose a Switch 2 key at no additional cost. They may instead request a key for Steam, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
Stairway asked affected backers to confirm their platform selection by November 5, 2026. The offer applies to people whose pledge reward was the cancelled original-Switch version; the announcement does not extend the same replacement or upgrade arrangement to all existing Coral Island owners.
Switch 2 pricing also remains unknown. Stairway has not confirmed preorders, a physical edition, a launch discount or an upgrade route for players who already own the game on another platform.
Cross-play is confirmed, but save transfer is not
Stairway describes the Switch 2 edition as supporting solo play and multiplayer for up to four players, with cross-play across “supported platforms.” The announcement does not identify which platforms will be able to play together.
Cross-save and cross-progression have not been confirmed either. Players considering a second copy should not assume that a farm created on PC, PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S can be transferred to Switch 2 unless Stairway announces that feature.
The developer has also provided no Switch 2 resolution, frame-rate, storage or online-subscription details. Readers following other relaxed and family-friendly releases for the console can also see our guide to more cozy games announced for Nintendo Switch 2.
