Dune: Awakening’s next map will not cost extra. Funcom has confirmed that Blood and Ice, a free expansion for PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, will launch on December 1, 2026. Its centerpiece is the Polar Sink, a new map in Arrakis’ frozen north that shifts the game’s survival focus from desert heat to extreme cold.

The important distinction is that Funcom describes this release as a free expansion rather than one of the game’s separately sold add-ons. The studio says it will be free for all players on every platform. At the same time, Funcom is introducing an optional cosmetics store that it says will help support continued development and future free updates. The announcement also provides a near-term roadmap for offline single-player, character copying and full cross-play.

Is Dune: Awakening’s Blood and Ice expansion free?

Yes. According to Funcom, Blood and Ice will be free for Dune: Awakening players on PC, PS5 and Xbox. The game’s official Steam listing also labels Blood and Ice a “Free Expansion.”

That wording matters because the Steam page separately lists paid DLC packs. Players should not assume that references to downloadable content mean Blood and Ice carries an additional charge: this expansion is free, while other paid add-ons remain available separately.

Funcom is also adding an optional cosmetics store. The studio says the shop will offer outfits, vehicle variants and base-customization items, with purchases supporting ongoing development and free updates. Funcom does not describe a cosmetics purchase as necessary to enter the Polar Sink or use the expansion’s progression systems.

What the Polar Sink adds

The Polar Sink is an entirely new survival map set in Arrakis’ frozen north. It comprises two distinct environments, the tundra and the ice cap, rather than simply placing snow over the existing desert. Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe’s announcement says the region is built around new progression systems and a different set of survival pressures.

Funcom estimates that the map offers around 35 hours of progression. That is the studio’s estimate rather than an independently tested completion time, and Funcom has not specified whether it represents a critical path, solo play or a typical first-time experience.

  • Cold becomes the principal environmental threat. Equipment built for desert conditions will need to be upgraded for the new environment.
  • Traversal, temperature management and combat are central factors in Polar Sink progression, according to Funcom.
  • New vehicle modules, augments and specialization traits are included in the expansion’s progression systems.
  • Harvested ice has a use beyond the new map. It can cool base equipment and speed production, giving players a practical reason to bring Polar Sink resources back to their bases.

Funcom says future updates will add more reasons to revisit the region. The developer has not yet provided the full launch-day patch notes, access requirements or progression prerequisites for the Polar Sink.

The Polar Sink follows an earlier delay

Earlier in 2026, Funcom said it had intended to release the then-described Polar Cap map as a free update alongside Water Wars, but moved it back as development priorities changed. GamesRadar+ reported that the studio called the map a huge amount of work while emphasizing that development remained active.

The December release therefore adds more than a snowy visual contrast to Arrakis. Based on Funcom’s description, the Polar Sink is a separate progression space with different environmental demands, new advancement options and an ice-harvesting loop that connects to base production.

Offline solo play and full cross-play are separate roadmap updates

Blood and Ice is not the only upcoming change. Funcom’s roadmap schedules offline single-player for November 2026, although the studio has not announced an exact day. That is a meaningful update for players following how Dune: Awakening’s dedicated solo mode works: dedicated single-player and offline play are distinct features, and the November offline target is separate from the expansion’s December 1 launch.

Funcom plans to add multiplayer-to-single-player character copying and full cross-play in January 2027. Until then, players should continue to account for the game’s current cross-play limits. January is a target for future features, not confirmation that full cross-play is already live, and Funcom has not yet detailed whether platform or server restrictions will apply.

“We’re far from done. We have ambitious plans for Dune: Awakening in 2027, with several major free updates that will expand the game with new locations, mechanics, and content to discover.”

Scott Junior, Funcom CEO, in the Blood and Ice announcement

Dune: Awakening Blood and Ice release date and roadmap

  • November 2026: Offline single-player is planned, with no specific launch day announced.
  • December 1, 2026: Blood and Ice launches free on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox, adding the Polar Sink.
  • January 2027: Multiplayer-to-single-player character copying and full cross-play are planned.

The clearest takeaway is that the expansion, including the Polar Sink and its roughly 35 hours of estimated progression, will be free, while purchases from the new cosmetics store will be optional. Players will need to wait for further information about the exact offline-mode date, cross-play restrictions, cosmetics pricing and launch-day requirements for entering the Polar Sink.
