MultiVersus Is Shutting Down—But Not Before One Last Big Brawl

MultiVersus Is Shutting Down—But Not Before One Last Big Brawl

February 2, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

If you were hoping to see Batman face off against Rick Sanchez for years to come, well… bad news, champ. Warner Bros.’ chaotic, meme-worthy platform fighter MultiVersus is officially shutting down on May 30, 2025, after just one year in the ring. Developer Player First Games confirmed the news in a heartfelt post, thanking players for their support and promising a grand finale in Season 5.

And honestly? This one stings.

MultiVersus was one of the most bizarre and unexpectedly fun fighting games out there—a world where Shaggy could go full Ultra Instinct on Arya Stark, and Tom & Jerry somehow made for an elite fighter duo. The game had so much potential. But despite all the crazy crossovers and a launch that brought in over 20 million players, things just didn’t work out.

Now, it’s all wrapping up, and we’re left wondering: what went wrong?

Season 5: One Last Hurrah Before the Curtain Falls

Before the game fades into digital oblivion, Season 5 kicks off on February 4, and it’s bringing in some final heavy hitters:

  • Lola Bunny (unlockable via daily rewards)
  • Aquaman (available through the Battle Pass)

Yes, you read that right. Looney Tunes meets Atlantis.

If MultiVersus had kept up this kind of energy, who knows what could have been? But hey, at least we’re getting one last chaotic showdown before the servers go dark.

If you’ve spent money (or countless hours) unlocking Batman skins, Steven Universe, or that ridiculous Uncle Shagworthy costume, don’t panic—you won’t lose everything.

  • All your earned and purchased content will still be accessible.
  • Offline modes (local play & training) will remain available.
  • Real-money transactions are disabled (so no last-minute Gleamium shopping sprees).
  • The game will be delisted from digital stores after May 30.

In other words, you can still enjoy the game—but only if you’ve already downloaded it before it disappears forever.

Why Is MultiVersus Shutting Down?

So, what actually happened here? How did a game that once broke records end up getting KO’d by reality? A few key issues led to MultiVersus tapping out:

1. The Player Drop-Off Was Brutal

At launch, MultiVersus had over 20 million players. Fast forward a few months, and those numbers fell off a cliff. Turns out, keeping players engaged is just as important as getting them in the door.

2. Warner Bros. Lost a LOT of Money

In a November earnings call, Warner Bros. Discovery confirmed MultiVersus was a major financial disappointment, contributing to a $100 million loss—and that’s on top of their $300 million games division meltdown, thanks to the flop that was Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League. Yikes.

3. A Rocky Live-Service Strategy

MultiVersus was designed as a free-to-play live-service game, but updates were too slow to keep players engaged. When you’re competing with Fortnite, Apex Legends, and Smash Bros., you can’t afford content droughts—and MultiVersus had plenty of them.

While MultiVersus is going dark, it’s worth noting that Player First Games didn’t outright say it’s gone forever. Could this be a soft reboot situation? Maybe. Could Warner Bros. try to relaunch the game in the future? Possibly. But for now, all signs point to this being the end of the road—so if you still want to watch Superman punch Bugs Bunny in the face, now’s your chance.

After May 30, MultiVersus will be gone from digital stores, and online play will be completely disabled. So whether you’re grinding for that final skin, playing your main one last time, or just logging in for the chaos, make the most of these last few months. Because once MultiVersus is gone, it’s GG, no rematch.
