Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet – Naughty Dog’s Next Big Adventure is All About Faith, Isolation, and a Whole New Universe

Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet – Naughty Dog’s Next Big Adventure is All About Faith, Isolation, and a Whole New Universe

Naughty Dog is venturing into uncharted (pun intended) territory. After years of crafting grounded, emotional narratives with games like The Last of Us and Uncharted, the studio is now diving headfirst into sci-fi with Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.

First announced at The Game Awards 2024, the game’s trailer teased an isolated bounty hunter stranded on the planet of Sempiria. But thanks to Neil Druckmann’s recent chat with Civil War director Alex Garland on Sony’s Creator to Creator podcast, we now know a whole lot more about the world Naughty Dog is building—and it’s nothing like what they’ve done before.

This isn’t just a space game. It’s a story about faith, isolation, and a civilization that’s been cut off from the galaxy for centuries. Druckmann revealed that the team has crafted 2,000 years of history for the world of Sempiria, all stemming from an alternate timeline where our universe took a different path in the 1980s.

A Universe Shaped by Faith and Separation

One of the most surprising revelations is that Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet will be deeply tied to themes of faith and religion. According to Druckmann, the game’s narrative centers around a civilization that has been severed from the rest of the galaxy for 600 years, developing its own belief systems and ways of life.

This isn’t a “space opera” filled with laser battles and wise-cracking smugglers—it’s shaping up to be something more introspective and atmospheric. Players will be strangers in an ancient, mysterious world, uncovering its beliefs, struggles, and the echoes of lost history.

Druckmann also emphasized that the game will make players feel lost and alone. If Naughty Dog’s past games have been about survival in brutal landscapes, Intergalactic seems to be about navigating the unknown, both physically and emotionally.

For a studio known for its strong, cinematic storytelling, this kind of slow-burn, immersive world-building makes perfect sense.

Sempiria isn’t just another dusty sci-fi backdrop—it’s a living, breathing place with a rich culture, deep history, and a unique religious foundation that’s been evolving for two millennia.

Druckmann hinted that the planet’s isolation will play a huge role in shaping its conflicts, politics, and the way its inhabitants view outsiders. And as a bounty hunter stranded in this world, players will likely have to navigate its religious structures, societal rules, and the inevitable clash between belief and survival.

This could mean anything from blending in with the locals, uncovering lost knowledge, or even challenging the faith that’s kept the planet together for centuries. Either way, it’s clear that Naughty Dog is building a world that feels real, lived-in, and—most importantly—utterly unfamiliar to players.

No Release Date Yet – And It’s Still Evolving

If you’re already imagining yourself lost in the alien sands of Sempiria, you might want to take a deep breath—because Druckmann made it clear that Intergalactic is still a long way from release. Naughty Dog is still deep in development, and while the studio has a clear vision of the world’s history and themes, Druckmann admitted that they’re still figuring out exactly what the final game will look like.

That means we’re probably looking at a few more years before this one hits PS5, but considering the scale and ambition Naughty Dog is aiming for, the wait might just be worth it. For now, what we do know is this: Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet is shaping up to be one of the most unique and thought-provoking sci-fi games in years.
