Assassin’s Creed Shadows May Be Coming to Switch 2 — Ubisoft Drops a Major Hint

Assassin’s Creed Shadows May Be Coming to Switch 2 — Ubisoft Drops a Major Hint

July 24, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Ubisoft’s highly anticipated stealth open-world RPG set in feudal Japan, is already eyeing a multi-platform splash this year—but it looks like Nintendo fans won’t be left out either. A new statement from Ubisoft strongly hints that the game might be heading to the unannounced but frequently rumoured Switch 2. While not confirmed, this has stirred plenty of speculation and cautious excitement across the gaming space.

Ubisoft Hints at Something Bigger Than We Think

During a recent Q&A with investors, Ubisoft dropped a loaded statement many fans didn’t miss. Referring to Assassin’s Creed Shadows and a future Nintendo console, Ubisoft boss Yves Guillemot said the company would “wait until the new Nintendo machine is fully deployed” before detailing more partnerships. That’s about as close to a wink and nod confirmation as we’re going to get at this point.

While they didn’t outright say “Shadows is coming to Nintendo Switch 2,” the phrasing and the historical precedent (remember Assassin’s Creed III Remastered, Black Flag and Rogue on the original Switch?)- suggest Ubisoft is cooking up something bigger than just a PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Mac release. If Switch 2 backwards compatibility and enhanced performance rumours hold true, this could open up the door for Shadows to be one of the most graphically ambitious handheld RPGs ever made.

Ubisoft Quebec has built Shadows to be the biggest leap for the franchise so far. Dual protagonists — the stealth-focused shinobi Naoe and brutal samurai Yasuke – mark a first for the series, blending historical storytelling with unique gameplay paths that shift depending on your play style. The question is: Can Nintendo’s successor handle that complexity?

Why Shadows on Switch 2 Would Be a Huge Deal

If AC Shadows releases on Switch 2, this would be the first time a major RPG in the modern Assassin’s Creed formula makes it to a Nintendo hybrid platform without significant downgrading. Ubisoft has always played the long game with Nintendo, testing waters with cloud versions and remasters. But with the Switch 2 rumoured to support DLSS and significantly upgraded internals, a native version of Shadows doesn’t sound far-fetched anymore.

What adds fire to the fuel is Guillemot’s phrasing of “many games” coming to Nintendo’s next system. It wasn’t even just a casual nod to Shadows. Ubisoft hinted at a broader strategy, possibly bringing multiple titles to Switch 2 sign of bigger things ahead.

Analysts have taken note, too. Industry watchers have long speculated that Ubisoft may be positioning itself to leverage Nintendo’s strong handheld market, especially after seeing the explosive success of the original Switch as a third-party ecosystem. After all, Switch 2 gamers crave big-budget single-player RPGs with portability. Shadows could fit that slot perfectly.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows’ release date remains locked for 15 November 2025 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Mac. No official comment has been made regarding a Nintendo Switch 2 version, and Ubisoft remains cautious about confirming anything beyond the current-gen listings. However, fans are already theorising how Switch 2 features, especially a possible 1080p portable mode and Nvidia-powered GPU, could elevate Shadows without the usual post-console launch compromises.

It’s no secret that fans want more core titles on Nintendo’s next powerhouse. AAA role-playing games like The Witcher 3 did well on the original Switch, even with visual scaling. Shadows, with its sprawling open world, dynamic weather, destructible environments, and dual-character system, could redefine what’s expected from AAA RPGs on Switch 2.

Whether Ubisoft leads that charge remains to be seen. But the hints dropped this week show they’re more than just interested. They’re preparing. We’ll just have to wait until Nintendo confirms its next-gen hardware, widely rumoured for a 2025/2026 window, to see how real these ambitions get.
