Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy Returns, But This Time, It’s Mobile Only

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy Returns, But This Time, It’s Mobile Only

October 15, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy is gearing up for a comeback, but longtime fans might not get the platform they’ve been hoping for. Square Enix is preparing to announce a brand new entry in the cult-favorite series, but as of now, it’s only headed to iOS and Android. The tease comes ahead of a confirmed announcement stream set for October 14th, where more details are expected to drop.

The new game, currently using the working title Team Boss Battle, marks the series’ return after years of dormancy, but not everyone’s thrilled with the mobile-exclusive direction. Square Enix has already launched a website showing off stylised shots of Tokyo and silhouettes of legendary Final Fantasy icons like Lightning, Rinoa, Cloud, and Zidane.

The Dissidia Duellum Legacy, and Why Mobile Matters

The Dissidia franchise started on the PSP in 2008, celebrating the series’ 20th anniversary by letting fans battle as their favourite characters from across Final Fantasy’s storied history. The original game carved out its own space with flashy 3D combat and a cast that felt like a greatest hits tour for the franchise. It was popular enough to spawn a 2011 sequel, and the series was eventually re-imagined for arcades and later the PS4 and PC as Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy NT.

In 2017 came the last big push: Dissidia Duellum Final Fantasy Opera Omnia for mobile. It took a more turn-based approach and amassed a dedicated audience, but like so many mobile spin-offs, its story ended early when Square Enix shut it down last February.

Fans will remember this isn’t the first time Square Enix pulled the plug on its ambitious mobile titles. Final Fantasy 7 The First Soldier and Final Fantasy: Brave Exvius have both gone dark recently, adding to growing scepticism about the future lifespan of their downloadable games.

Given this track record, fans are uneasy. Many fear the new Dissidia could fall into the same trap: another gacha-driven battler destined for a short run. There’s no confirmation yet on gameplay, monetisation, or how deeply nostalgia will be mined or tested this time around.

Still, Square Enix clearly isn’t stepping away from mobile experiments. Just last month, the publisher announced Dragon Quest Smash/Grow for phones, looking to capitalise on a fresh boost for the series and chase that lucrative mobile audience. No word if that strategy will pay off this time, but it’s a sign the company’s betting big on portable play, even as fans of series staples hold out hope for a return to consoles.

Until the announcement stream, the only official preview is a teaser trailer and a few site assets peppered with heroic silhouettes. The wait, for now, is just a day longer, but the franchise faithful aren’t hiding their disappointment over the choice of platform.
