Nightreign Takes a Bold Step by Removing the In-Game Messaging System
January 5, 2025Elden Ring: Nightreign, the highly anticipated spin-off of FromSoftware’s monumental RPG, is already making waves for a surprising decision. The game will not feature the in-game messaging system—a beloved hallmark of Elden Ring and other FromSoft titles. Instead, it aims to deliver a “condensed RPG” experience where fast-paced gameplay precedes player-to-player communication.

No Messages? The Reason Behind the Decision
Director Junya Ishizaki recently explained the rationale for dropping the messaging system in an interview with IGN Japan. The decision stems from Nightreign’s shorter, more condensed gameplay sessions, which average around 40 minutes.
“The reason we removed the message feature is that in this game, where each session is about 40 minutes long, there is no time to write your own message and no time to read messages written by others,” Ishizaki said via machine translation.
Instead, Nightreign focuses on keeping players immersed in the action, eliminating the need for the often cheeky or cryptic messages that have become synonymous with FromSoft’s titles.
What Nightreign Keeps—and What It Changes
Nightreign retains several beloved mechanics from Elden Ring, such as sites of grace and ghostly glimpses of other players’ actions. However, the absence of the messaging system isn’t the only significant tweak.
1. Shorter, Packed Gameplay Sessions
Nightreign’s “condensed RPG” structure is designed to offer a complete experience within a single session. Ishizaki emphasized that this approach allows players to encounter the highs and lows of RPG progression—gains, losses, and ultimately, fulfilment—in a streamlined format.
2. Defeated Enemies Stay Down
Unlike the original Elden Ring, enemies in Nightreign will not respawn after being defeated, even if you rest at a site of grace. This creates a more focused gameplay loop, where every victory feels permanent within the context of each session.
3. Reworked Ashes System
Ashes, which allow players to summon spirits for assistance, will make a return, but their mechanics have been overhauled. Specific details remain under wraps, but fans are eager to see how this staple feature evolves in Nightreign.
Miyazaki’s Minimal Involvement
While Hidetaka Miyazaki, the mastermind behind Elden Ring and Dark Souls, contributed to Nightreign’s initial concept, he stepped aside early in development. Ishizaki, a FromSoftware veteran since 2011, has taken the reins, promising a fresh yet familiar experience that pays homage to its roots.
“Elden Ring spin-off Nightreign is a very exciting game that will excite players,” Ishizaki stated. “It will provide a sense of accomplishment and joy that is different from previous titles, so please look forward to it.”
Gamers are divided over the removal of the messaging system. On one hand, the messages often provided valuable tips, warnings, and a touch of humour that softened the challenges of FromSoft’s notoriously punishing games.
On the other hand, some players welcome the change, believing it aligns with Nightreign’s focus on faster-paced, self-contained experiences. Without messages, players must rely more on their own instincts, making each victory feel even more personal.
For those eager to try Nightreign firsthand, a network test is scheduled for February, with registration beginning on January 10th. This beta phase will allow players to explore the reimagined mechanics and offer feedback ahead of the game’s full release.
