Final Fantasy XIV’s Evercold Expansion Announced with Switch 2 Release, Major System Overhaul, and January 2027 Launch
April 26, 2026Square Enix will launch Final Fantasy XIV Online on Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026, alongside an early access period, while its major new expansion, Evercold, has been confirmed for a global release in January 2027 with sweeping updates including two new jobs, battle system changes, and expanded character customisation.
At Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, producer and director Naoki Yoshida announced that Final Fantasy XIV’s sixth expansion, Evercold, will initiate the Godless Realms Saga in January 2027. In tandem, Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu revealed Final Fantasy XIV Online’s Nintendo Switch 2 version will launch in August 2026, introducing the acclaimed MMORPG to a broader audience. Square Enix stated, “We plan to have an early access period to test server stability, then launch into official service. Adventurers from more platforms than ever before can join together to enjoy this vast world.”
Yoshida detailed that Evercold will debut an unprecedented overhaul of Final Fantasy XIV’s battle system, introducing two selectable modes at launch: Reborn Mode, which retains the current combat structure and job mechanics, and Evolved Mode, which “offers greater emphasis on job identity.” Yoshida confirmed, “New jobs introduced in Evercold will only be playable using Evolved mode.” The expansion will add two entirely new jobs: one tank and one physical ranged DPS.
The battle system changes are designed to “modernise combat and deepen class distinction,” aiming to address long-standing player feedback about job variety. The new armoury update will also enhance multi-job playability, with streamlined gear management.
Evecold brings a significant rework to seasonal progression and player rewards. Yoshida revealed, “The launch of Evercold will also introduce an overhaul to seasons and how players earn rewards and improve their characters.” Major features include:
- Level cap increased: From 100 to 110
- New cities: Unnamed at announcement, designed to anchor the Godless Realms Saga
- Distinctive new areas: Expanding the explorable map
- Gigantic constructs and monstrous threats: Promised as marquee battles
- New allies: Additional narrative-driven companion characters
- New dungeons, trials, raid series, and a new Ultimate raid: Core PvE content increases
- PvP updates: Changes to competitive multiplayer systems
- Ongoing content updates: Including new gear, crafting recipes, and Duty Support System improvements
- Expanded character customisation: Greater personalisation options introduced
Square Enix CEO Takashi Kiryu emphasised the impact of the Nintendo Switch 2 release, directly stating, “Adventurers from more platforms than ever before can join together to enjoy this vast world.” The Switch 2 release is expected to drive significant cross-platform player activity, leveraging the hardware’s portability for flexible MMO access.
With ongoing development plans, Square Enix has signalled its intent to support the game well beyond Evercold, promising “ongoing content updates, including new gear and crafting recipes, updates to the Duty Support System and more.” This persistent update cycle ensures Final Fantasy XIV remains one of the most robust and forward-looking MMORPGs on the market, serving millions of players across PC, PlayStation, and Switch ecosystems.
