Firebreak Pushes Back Rogue Protocol Update, Doubles Down on Polish as Sales Miss Targets

Firebreak Pushes Back Rogue Protocol Update, Doubles Down on Polish as Sales Miss Targets

November 23, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

FBC: Firebreak‘s much-anticipated Rogue Protocol update won’t arrive this year. Remedy Entertainment is moving the release to an unspecified date in January 2026, explaining that the new content ‘still needs a bit more time’ to reach the level fans deserve.

While players were hoping to dive into the new wave-based mode this month, they’ll have to wait a bit longer. The good news? Cross-platform voice chat is finally live, landing as planned and delivering the kind of crossplay experience the community has pushed for since launch.

The Rogue Protocol update is more than just another patch. It’s set to introduce Endless Shift, a fresh mode that drops teams into a sealed arena where survival is anything but guaranteed. The mode ramps up the challenge with each wave, and every run starts you off with just the basics, no overpowered equipment, no easy outs.

Your best chance hinges on adaptability. After clearing a wave, you’ll earn a resource called Corruption, a mysterious residue left by defeated foes. Corruption can be spent between rounds to unlock new weapons, upgrades, and enhancements, letting you experiment with new builds every single run. Remedy promises that ‘everything feels right: polished, balanced, and worthy of your time’ by the time you get your hands on it.

This will mark Firebreak’s second major content drop since September’s Breakpoint update, which overhauled major systems based on player feedback. The devs say they’ve spent the summer committed to ‘significant improvements and new systems, as well as content,’ aiming to address core complaints and raise the bar for ongoing support.

Behind the Scenes: Delays, Disappointment, and Major Shakeups

The anticipation for Rogue Protocol comes at a complicated time for Remedy. Last month, the studio admitted that Firebreak had fallen short of its internal player and revenue targets, even after the positive impact of its most recent update. Despite seeing ‘improved player and sales metrics,’ the numbers weren’t enough to satisfy Remedy or their investors.

The studio issued a profit warning, saying weak sales had ‘a substantial impact’ on its financial outlook, and that projected operating profit is now expected to be ‘negative and below the previous year.’ The situation escalated when CEO Tero Virtala abruptly stepped down just ten days after the financial report, leaving Remedy at a pivotal crossroads as it tries to steady the Firebreak ship.

So, while cross-platform chat finally delivers a win for players, fans looking to master Endless Shift will need patience, and perhaps a bit of hope that Remedy’s longer-term efforts pay off. For now, January can’t come soon enough.
