Friday the 13th Prequel Game Announced: Horror Fans Get a New Origin Story

July 28, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

A brand-new Friday the 13th game is officially underway, and this time, it’s going back to where the horror began. Gun Media and IllFonic have announced that a prequel to the cult-favourite multiplayer slasher is in the works.

The Friday the 13th Universe Expands

According to Eurogamer, a new single-player and multiplayer horror game set in the Friday the 13th universe is now in development. Unlike the original Friday the 13th: The Game, which was released in 2017, the upcoming title serves as a prequel. While plot details are still limited, the game’s focus will be on the origins of the iconic franchise, offering fans a new perspective on its infamous lore.

Gun Media’s official announcement confirms they are collaborating once again with indie studio IllFonic. This marks a significant return for both companies. IllFonic originally co-developed the 2017 game but later moved on to other multiplayer projects, including Predator: Hunting Grounds. Their reunion signals a refreshed effort to revisit the Friday the 13th licence with new ambition.

IllFonic posted an image confirming its involvement in the project, and Gun Media published a statement alongside it: “We’re back. Gun Interactive and IllFonic are joining forces once again to create a new game based on Friday the 13th. The project is a prequel. That’s all we can say for now.”

Reflecting on the Legacy of the Original Game

This new title comes after a turbulent period for the franchise’s gaming rights. The original Friday the 13th: The Game faced an extended licensing battle that severely limited its planned updates, new content, and long-term support. Gun Media previously stated that because of these legal issues, they could no longer develop or release new content, and the game eventually reached its end of service.

Despite these setbacks, the title managed to foster a committed fanbase across major platforms such as PC, PS4, and Xbox One. Players praised its asymmetrical multiplayer format, where groups of survivors attempted to escape an unstoppable Jason Voorhees. The title’s unique blend of nostalgia, horror, and cooperative gameplay became a major draw within the indie horror gaming scene.

As Eurogamer notes, the new prequel marks the first full-fledged return to the Friday the 13th licence for Gun Media and IllFonic since that original title. While there’s no word yet on release dates, pricing, or supported platforms, the development has already sparked interest among fans of horror video games and classic slasher franchises alike.

With clear ties to its predecessor but a shift in narrative focus, this prequel has the potential to reshape how fans understand the roots of Camp Crystal Lake and Jason’s terrifying legend. The involvement of the original teams adds credibility to the new project, which will likely carry the spiritual DNA of the 2017 release while setting a different gameplay tone.
