How Gears of War: E-Day’s 12-Player Horde Siege Works
July 30, 2026Horde Siege puts three four-player squads on one battlefield, but each squad receives its own mission.
Gears of War: E-Day’s Horde Siege is a 12-player cooperative mode, but all 12 players will not follow the same objective. Xbox says the mode divides them into three squads of four. Each squad receives its own mission while fighting on the same stage. That structure is the main difference between Horde Siege and a simple, larger Horde match. Your squad will focus on its own task while two other teams fight elsewhere on the shared battlefield. Some events may then bring all three squads together.
The details come from Xbox’s July 30 multiplayer deep dive. They explain what each four-person group will do inside a match, although many rules are still unknown.
Gears of War: E-Day’s Horde Siege uses three squads on one map
Xbox describes Horde Siege as a player-versus-environment mode, usually shortened to PvE. This means players cooperate against computer-controlled enemies rather than fight one another. The mode supports 12 players divided into three four-person squads. Each squad gets a separate mission, but all three operate on the same stage. Xbox has not revealed the available mission types or how often squads will cross paths.
The confirmed setup still gives each group a clear local responsibility instead of placing all 12 players in one large team. This should create a different rhythm from a single-team survival mode. Four players can handle their own assignment while the rest of the lobby works on other parts of the battle. That comparison is an inference from Xbox’s description, not a complete set of published rules.
Classes and optional objectives add choices for each squad

Xbox says Horde Siege includes classes, although it has not named or explained them. In multiplayer games, a class is a role with particular abilities or strengths. The mode also includes optional objectives that can reward your squad. These extra jobs appear to give teams choices beyond completing their main mission. Xbox has not said what the rewards will be or whether they will carry into later matches. The practical point is that your four-person squad will need to make its own decisions. The other eight players share the battlefield, but your immediate coordination will happen within your smaller team.
VGC observed events that brought all three squads together
Video Games Chronicle’s invited hands-on preview provides more detail about how the shared map worked in one preview build. VGC reports that squads generally pursued separate objectives. Map-wide events called Boss Invasions then required the three groups to work together against a larger threat.
Xbox’s July 30 article does not describe Boss Invasions in the same detail. They should therefore be treated as an observation from VGC’s preview session, not a complete promise about the final mode. VGC’s footage also shows Blitz, which it describes as a shorter Horde Siege version, on a map called Golden Quarter. Those names and details come from the preview build and may not reflect the final launch version.
What Xbox has confirmed about the August 6 beta
Xbox says its Early Access Open Beta begins on August 6, 2026. Players can enter this early-access period by pre-ordering Gears of War: E-Day or subscribing to Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. The official Gears of War beta page also lists August 6 as the start date. However, the retrieved official material does not confirm whether Horde Siege will be playable during that beta.
Xbox also has not provided an official end date in the material reviewed for this article. VGC reports an August 6 to 10 window, but players should wait for a complete official schedule before treating August 10 as confirmed. The beta’s maps, classes, progression and optional-objective rewards also remain unconfirmed. Anyone considering a pre-order for beta access should not assume that every feature shown in the multiplayer deep dive will be available.
Versus returns with four unnamed modes
Horde Siege is not E-Day’s only multiplayer component. Xbox says competitive Versus will return with four modes and use the game’s new movement mechanics. The July 30 announcement does not name those four modes. Our earlier report on E-Day’s movement and combat changes covers other updates The Coalition is making to familiar Gears systems. Gears of War: E-Day is due to launch on October 6, 2026. Xbox has yet to explain the Horde Siege classes, the full range of squad missions and how often events such as Boss Invasions occur.
