Grand Theft Auto 6 on PC? Take-Two Exec Keeps It Vague, But We All Know What’s Coming
February 12, 2025Grand Theft Auto 6 is coming later this year, but PC players are being left in the dark—again. PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S users will get first dibs, while Rockstar and its parent company, Take-Two, remain incredibly vague about whether (or when) the game will arrive on PC.
While Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick didn’t confirm anything, he did drop some hints about Rockstar’s historical approach to PC releases—one that strongly suggests GTA 6 will eventually make its way to desktops. The only question is: How long will PC players have to wait this time?

“Rockstar Has a Pattern”—And We All Know It
In a recent interview with IGN, Zelnick basically dodged the question about GTA 6’s PC release but still managed to confirm what we already suspected:
“Historically, Rockstar has started with some platforms and then historically moved to other platforms.”
That’s corporate-speak for: “Yeah, we’re probably bringing it to PC, but we’re not ready to say it yet.”
This is nothing new. GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, then arrived on PS4 and Xbox One a year later, before finally dropping on PC in 2015—a full 18 months after its initial release. Red Dead Redemption 2 followed the same pattern, taking a year to move from consoles to PC.
It’s pretty safe to assume GTA 6 is taking the same route—but Rockstar isn’t ready to talk about it just yet.
The Business Side of Delaying PC Releases

There’s a good reason Rockstar does this, and (spoiler alert) it’s all about money.
Zelnick acknowledged that while PC gaming is growing, Take-Two’s revenue breakdown tells a different story:
- 54% of its revenue comes from mobile games (thanks to its $12.7 billion Zynga acquisition).
- 37% comes from console gaming.
- PC sales? Just 9%.
With numbers like that, prioritizing consoles makes sense, at least from a financial standpoint.
But that’s not to say PC isn’t important. In fact, Zelnick admitted that PC versions of big titles can eventually make up 40% of total sales. In other words, GTA 6 coming to PC isn’t a question of “if”—it’s a question of “when.”
Why Not Just Release Everything at Once?

If Rockstar already has a PC version running in the background, why not launch it alongside the console versions?
Former Rockstar developer Mike York explained this strategy, revealing that the PC version of the game exists during development but is mainly used to support the console versions.
“There’s always a PC version of the game, but it’s not polished, and it’s just kind of feeding the other games and making them work.”
Basically, Rockstar prioritizes optimizing the console versions first, then goes back and fine-tunes the PC version. It’s not just about maximizing profits—it’s about making sure the PC port doesn’t turn into a disaster (looking at you, GTA: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition).
So, When Will Grand Theft Auto 6 Hit PC?
If history repeats itself, PC players might have to wait at least a year before getting their hands on a properly optimized version of GTA 6.
For now, we’re stuck waiting for Rockstar to officially acknowledge a PC version, even though everyone knows it’s coming.
Until then, PC gamers will be watching from the sidelines, just like we did with GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2. And let’s be honest—we’ll probably do it again when Rockstar eventually announces GTA 7.
