The Rise and Sudden Collapse of Hytale – What Happened to the ‘Next Minecraft’?

The Rise and Sudden Collapse of Hytale – What Happened to the ‘Next Minecraft’?

June 29, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

After ten long years of excitement, memes, and “any day now” updates, development on the so called “Minecraft Killer”, Hytale—once hailed as the next big thing in sandbox gaming—has officially been cancelled. Yeah, it hurts. For a generation of gamers watching trailers, reading dev blogs, and counting down until that elusive release date, this news hits like a creeper on hardcore mode. But what went wrong with Hytale? Why did the blocky RPG-sandbox dream crumble just steps away from the finish line?

A Decade of Hype: How Hytale Captivated the Minecraft Community

Back when Hytale was first revealed in 2018 with that jaw-dropping trailer, the buzz was surreal. Created by Hypixel Studios, the project promised a mashup of everyone’s favourites: the limitless creativity of Minecraft, the exploration of RPGs, and even modding support baked right in. The game exploded on YouTube and Reddit, sparking wild speculation and wishlist videos galore. Then in 2020, when Riot Games acquired Hypixel Studios, we thought, “This is it. Hytale’s going AAA.” Instead, it signalled the slow, quiet dev spiral we now know never got off the ground.

Promise Turned Pressure: The Riot Games Buyout and Growing Expectations

When a blockbuster like Riot picks up your indie project, it should mean smoother development, right? Turns out, not always. According to developers inside Hypixel Studios, Riot’s support brought structure, but also pressure. Scaling the project from modder passion to mass-market product added complexity. What was once a love letter to Minecraft quickly evolved into something… different. “The tools and pipelines just weren’t ready for what Hytale was turning into,” one dev reportedly told Eurogamer. Riot wanted polish, polish demanded time, and by the time 2023 rolled in, Hytale had gone from a hot sandbox breakout to a ghost in dev limbo.

“Hytale Is Cancelled”—The Official Announcement No One Wanted

On June 23, 2025, Hypixel Studios posted the bombshell: Hytale is cancelled. After ten years of work, the team admitted they couldn’t envision a version of the game that met their ambitions and the expectations of fans. You can read the full post over on Eurogamer, but warning—it stings. Instead of pushing forward with a compromised version, Hypixel chose to pull the plug entirely. For the players waiting years for open worlds, RPG combat, and survival alongside friends in a blocky wonderland, the message was simple: it’s not happening.

The Skeleton in the Sandbox: Too Much Innovation?

One of Hytale’s problems may have been ambition overload. The dev team wasn’t just building a Minecraft-alike—they were crafting robust scripting systems, custom multiplayer tools, a cinematic engine, and full modding support from day one. On paper, that’s gamer heaven. In practice, it’s a logistical nightmare, especially under the weight of Unreal Engine conversion and a remote studio setup. Even fans started peeling away as promises faded. “The mood shifted from ‘can’t wait’ to ‘if it ever launches,’” one Redditor said. The 2023 target slipped to 2025. Then silence. Then… the end.

So, Was Hytale Ever Real?

Yep. People played it internally, and reports say parts of it were genuinely fun. But as with too many indie block-builders before it, scope-creep swallowed the core experience. With dev diaries stretching thinner and community patience wearing off, Hytale became more myth than game. Kind of like gaming’s Half-Life 3, but with more pickaxes.

Interestingly, Hypixel isn’t shutting down. They’ve hinted at channelling lessons learned into future projects. So maybe the dream isn’t dead—just… respawned somewhere else. Hopefully, with fewer dragons to slay (literally and project management-wise). For now, the world is down one potential best Minecraft alternative. But the impact Hytale had as an idea, as an internet legend, and as a community hype train? That doesn’t vanish so easily.
