John Wick: Chapter 4 Release Date and Big Cast Members
October 25, 2021There is no better time to talk about the highly anticipated John Wick: Chapter 4 now that it is only about 6 months away. It’s been eight years since the franchise’s first instalment, John Wick. What appeared to be a simple, low-budget action thriller film grew into a massive franchise worth nearly $600 million worldwide. Since the release of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum in 2019, Lionsgate has immediately announced a fourth instalment, which will feature Reeves’ return. The COVID-19 pandemic, however, has been a mitigating factor in John Wick: Chapter 4’s original release date of May 21st.
Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer initially stated that a John Wick 4 and a John Wick 5 would be filmed concurrently. However, the idea was abandoned in March 2021 due to numerous delays caused by the pandemic or scheduling conflicts. Now, John Wick: Chapter 4 has finally begun filming in June 2021, with primary locations in Berlin, Paris, Japan, and New York.
Possible Plot Of John Wick: Chapter 4
There is no official narrative synopsis for John Wick: Chapter 4 yet, but fans who saw the last film may already have a good idea of what to expect. As the final minutes of the film demonstrate, John betrayed the High Table by refusing to murder Winston. Winston, however, shot John multiple times, leading him to fall from a building and handed over to The Bowery King for recovery. Following this, John Wick, who is gravely hurt, declares war on the High Table. John Wick: Chapter 4 is expected to go deeper into the assassin-infested world while also increasing the kill count in some way.
In an interview with IndieWire in 2019, director Chad Stahelski discussed his opinions on John Wick’s future, warning that it may not be what fans expect. In his words – “John may survive all this s***, but at the end of it, there’s no happy ending. He’s got nowhere to go,” Stahelski adds. “Honestly, I challenge you right now, here’s a question to you: How do you f***ing want me to end it? Do you think he’s going to ride off into the f***ing sunset? He’s killed 300 f***ing people and he’s just going to [walk away], everything’s okay? He’s just going to fall in love with a love interest? If you’re this f***ing guy if this guy really exists, how is this guy’s day going to end? He’s f***ed for the rest of his life. It’s just a matter of time.”
Lawrence Fishburne also added during the discussion on his return to Collider last summer, praising the script for the John Wick: Chapter 4 movie. In his words – “I read the script. It’s really, really cool. As much as it’s the same world as the other three films, it’s just deeper. It’s much deeper in terms of the code of the assassin and the relationship that he has with one character in particular who I think Mr Watanabe is playing… is really the heart and soul of it.” (gamerant, 2021)
Fans of the John Wick franchise are eagerly awaiting the release of this film, which is expected to have more intense action scenes and thrilling plot twists. The previous films in the series have been highly praised for their stylish action, world-building, and Keanu Reeves’ performance as the titular character, so expectations are high for this instalment.
Cast and Characters
Keanu Reeves will be returning as John Wick, the Boogeyman (aka Baba Yaga) with over 300 assassinations. Ian McShane will return as Winston, the manager of the New York Continental Hotel, Laurence Fishburne as The Bowery King, Wick’s devoted partner who oversees the underground intelligent network disguised as a homeless shelter, and Lance Reddick as Charon, the Continental’s concierge, are all scheduled to return. Donnie Yen, Bill Skarsgard, Hiroyuki Sanada, Scott Adkins, Shamier Anderson, and Clancy Brown have also been cast in parts that have yet to be revealed.
Above all, The John Wick universe is already set to expand, with the goal of introducing new fan favourites. Stahelski and writer Derek Kolstad are already working on a spin-off series named The Continental. It will focus on a young Winston in the 1970s, while other rumoured crossovers including David Leitch’s Atomic Blonde and Derek Kolstad’s work on Nobody could happen.
On March 24th, 2023, John Wick: Chapter 4 will be released in theatres.
