Did John Wick Die in Chapter 4? Ending Explained

John Wick appears to die at the end of John Wick: Chapter 4 after the duel with Caine and the Marquis de Gramont. The movie shows John collapsing on the Sacre-Coeur steps, then later shows his grave beside Helen’s. Still, the ending leaves enough ambiguity for fans to question whether he truly died, especially with Ballerina now released and John Wick 5 listed by Lionsgate as being in early development.

Why John Wick Might Be Truly Dead

At the end of John Wick: Chapter 4, John faces Caine in a duel arranged by the Marquis de Gramont. Both men take turns shooting each other, and John is badly wounded. The Marquis believes he has won and takes Caine’s gun to finish John himself, but John had saved his final shot. John kills the Marquis, wins his freedom from the High Table, then collapses on the Sacre-Coeur steps while thinking of Helen.

The grave scene also supports the idea that John is dead. Winston and the Bowery King visit a grave marked with John’s name beside Helen’s, which gives the movie the feeling of a completed ending rather than a simple cliffhanger. That reading makes emotional sense for the character. John spends the series fighting to escape the life that took everything from him. Chapter 4 gives him freedom, peace, and a final connection to his wife.

Why John Wick Might Still Be Alive

The last scene of John Wick: Chapter 4 shows Ian McShane’s Continental manager Winston, Laurence Fishburne’s Bowery King, and John’s dog at Wick’s gravestone. Following John’s wishes, Winston took him back to New York to be buried with his wife. The Bowery King seemed to think it was too good to be true, asking Winston if he thought the Baba Yaga went to Heaven or Hell. Winston simply replied “Who knows?” with the Bowery King giving a mysterious laugh. It looks like John is gone for good, but there’s still a chance he faked his death and is living a peaceful life somewhere.

The Bowery King’s chuckle could hint that he and Winston know this. Even with the success of Chapter 4, the filmmakers may not want to say goodbye to John Wick just yet. We may never know if he’s truly gone, so for now, we’ll have to accept that John Wick is dead in the last scene of Chapter 4.

Despite John Wick’s death in Chapter 4, it’s looking like a fifth movie could still be on the cards. Keanu and Stahelski have both said they’re not ready to say goodbye to the franchise, and Lionsgate’s head executive has said they don’t want to say goodbye to Keanu either. According to Stahelski “As for John Wick, you will never [hear] Keanu or I say, we’re done.” Keanu even said he’s not against coming back, so you never know! Stating “Never say never”.

What Ballerina, The Continental, and John Wick 5 Mean for John Wick’s Fate

Ballerina is not proof that John survived Chapter 4, because the film is set between John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum and John Wick: Chapter 4. It brings Keanu Reeves back as John Wick, but it uses him during an earlier point in the timeline, so his appearance does not undo the grave scene at the end of Chapter 4.

The Continental also does not confirm that John is alive. Peacock’s prequel miniseries is set in the 1970s and focuses on a younger Winston and the origins of the hotel, long before the events of Chapter 4. It expands the world, but it does not answer John’s fate directly.

John Wick 5 is the bigger reason the ending still feels open. Lionsgate has listed the film as being in early development, which means the studio has not closed the door on Keanu Reeves returning. Until the next movie explains it, Chapter 4 should be treated as an intentionally ambiguous ending: John may have died, but the franchise left itself room to reveal another path.
