Marvel Rivals on Switch 2? Developers Say It’s “Open”—But Don’t Get Too Excited Yet

February 16, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

If you’re a Marvel Rivals fan who also happens to be a die-hard Nintendo Switch player, you might have felt a little left out. The hero-based shooter has been making waves on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, but there’s no Switch version in sight.

However, hope is not completely lost. The game’s developer, NetEase, recently hinted that a Nintendo Switch 2 version could be possible—but that doesn’t mean it’s happening anytime soon. So, what’s the deal?

Marvel Rivals on Switch 2

During the DICE Summit in Las Vegas, NetEase producer Weicong Wu addressed the possibility of Marvel Rivals coming to the Nintendo Switch 2. And while he didn’t outright confirm anything, his response was a lot more promising than a hard “no.”

“We’re already in contact with Nintendo and working on some development kits. And whenever we find that we could provide great performance for our game on Switch 2, we’re open to that.”

That’s a much softer stance than what we heard about the original Nintendo Switch, which Wu said simply couldn’t handle the game’s performance requirements. In other words:

  • Switch 1? Too weak.
  • Switch 2? Maybe… if it’s powerful enough.

This means that NetEase is at least considering the possibility, but there’s a big “if” involved—the game has to run well.

Why Marvel Rivals Was Never on the First Switch

It’s no secret that Nintendo’s first Switch is starting to feel a little outdated, especially when it comes to modern shooters.

  • The hardware is over seven years old at this point.
  • It struggles with high-performance, visually demanding games.
  • Many fast-paced shooters require higher frame rates to feel smooth, something the Switch often can’t consistently achieve.

For games like Marvel Rivals, which thrive on fast combat, intense abilities, and high frame rates, the first Switch just wasn’t cutting it. NetEase made it clear that they didn’t want to release a version of the game that would feel like a watered-down experience.

Could the Switch 2 Finally Be Powerful Enough?

Nintendo has finally officially announced the Switch 2, though details are still scarce. What we do know is that it’s expected to be:

  • More powerful than its predecessor (thankfully).
  • Possibly equipped with mouse-like controls (which could be great for shooters).
  • Designed to support bigger, modern games that were previously out of reach.

If the Switch 2 is as capable as some rumours suggest, then Marvel Rivals could actually be a real possibility. That being said, we still don’t know exactly how strong the console will be, and NetEase is waiting to see if it meets its performance standards.

What Would a Switch 2 Version Look Like?

If Marvel Rivals does make it onto the Switch 2, it’s likely going to come with some trade-offs.

  • Frame rates might be lower compared to the PS5, Xbox Series X, or high-end PCs.
  • Visual effects could be slightly toned down to ensure smoother gameplay.
  • Online connectivity would depend heavily on Nintendo’s online services, which—let’s be honest—have always been a bit hit or miss.

That said, if the Switch 2 can handle it, there’s a lot of potential here. The game’s hero-based team battles could be a perfect fit for Nintendo’s multiplayer-focused audience.

While NetEase’s statement is promising, it’s important to stay realistic.

  • The game hasn’t been confirmed for Switch 2—just that the developers are “open” to it.
  • A Switch port would take time, possibly arriving long after the game’s initial hype has settled.
  • The Switch 2’s actual hardware capabilities remain a mystery, and if it’s not strong enough, this whole conversation becomes irrelevant.

For now, Marvel Rivals remains a game built for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. But if Nintendo’s new console can pack enough power, it could finally bring some of these high-performance shooters to a whole new audience.
