Confirmed Mortal Kombat 1 DLC Ends as NetherRealm Moves to Its Next Fatal Project
May 24, 2025Well, it’s official. The Mortal Kombat 1 DLC train has reached its final stop—and we hope you enjoyed your ride with Omni-Man, Homelander, and Peacemaker. After months of hopeful speculation, guest character drops, and even a surprise pink ninja, Warner Bros. and NetherRealm have confirmed there will be no more DLC characters or story chapters for Mortal Kombat 1. And just like that, the curtains close earlier than many fans expected.

According to the official Mortal Kombat social post, while the game will continue to receive balance updates and technical fixes, major content additions are done. Finito. Flawless conclusion.
“We Need to Focus on the Next Project”
In the statement, Warner Bros. acknowledged the disappointment this news might bring, but explained that NetherRealm is shifting focus to its next big title:
“We understand this will be disappointing for fans, but our team at NetherRealm needs to shift focus to the next project in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”
While they didn’t name that next project, the internet’s best guess right now? Injustice 3. Yep, the DC Universe might be next in line for a revival, with Batman uppercutting Superman through the moon again.
But Didn’t Ed Boon Promise More Support?
Yes. And fans are already digging up the receipts. In a tweet from September 2024, MK co-creator Ed Boon told fans that “NetherRealm is still fully committed to supporting Mortal Kombat 1 for a long time to come.” Fast forward to March 2025, and that “long time” looks more like “we dropped the T-1000 and dipped.” That Terminator-themed content drop, by the way, will now go down as Mortal Kombat 1’s final major addition. Not quite the explosive finale players expected—but hey, at least the T-1000 turned into swords and stabbed people in the face, so there’s that.
A Slower, Shorter Run Than Expected

Here’s the thing: Mortal Kombat 1 was never really able to match the heights of MK11, which sold over 15 million copies and had years of DLC, including fan favourites like Mileena, Rain, and the Aftermath story expansion. MK1, by comparison, has sold 5 million copies, which is still respectable, but definitely feels like a step back when you consider the franchise has now surpassed 100 million total.
This announcement comes just one year and eight months after MK1’s release. For comparison, MK11 was supported for over two years before NetherRealm moved on. That shorter timeline has left some fans scratching their heads, especially after MK1’s Definitive Edition launched not long ago—usually a sign that more is coming. But not this time.
Despite mixed reviews and some rocky launch months, MK1 had its moments. The secret fight against Floyd, a long-teased pink ninja, brought the community together in January. It was a rare high point, reminiscent of the golden days when Kombat Kodes and hidden characters ruled playground conversations. Still, those bright spots were too few and far between for many in the hardcore MK community, who felt the game lacked long-term content and meaningful updates post-launch.
So What’s Next for Mortal Kombat?
Even though the DLC era is over, Mortal Kombat as a franchise isn’t going anywhere. Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav previously confirmed that Mortal Kombat is one of four core franchises the company plans to “double down” on. Plus, the live-action Mortal Kombat 2 film is on its way, which could spark a whole new wave of interest in the franchise. Expect blood. Expect shouting. Probably expect a trailer where Scorpion yells “Get over here!” at someone completely unprepared.
