Rebellions Secures $124M in Series B Funding to Develop Revolutionary AI Chip with Samsung
January 30, 2024Hey, check this out! There’s some big news from South Korea’s tech world. Rebellions, this cool AI chip startup, just scored a huge win by wrapping up a Series B funding round. They managed to rake in a whopping $124 million (that’s 165 billion KRW!). And get this, they’re planning to use that moolah to supercharge the development of their third AI chip called Rebel, and they’re teaming up with Samsung Electronics for it. With this new funding, Rebellions is now valued at around $658 million (or 880 billion KRW, if you want to get technical). Pretty impressive, right?

AI Chip Revolution Amidst Intense Competition
The funding is a big deal for the chip industry, especially when it comes to developing AI chips. Right now, Nvidia is the big boss in the AI chip market, but Rebellions and some other players are getting ready to give them a run for their money. The thing is, AI applications still have problems with processing data and being too expensive, so the industry is on the lookout for some cool new ideas to fix that.
Big tech giants like Google, Amazon, Apple, and Microsoft are getting into the chip game to bring AI to their products and services. Open AI seems to be digging South Korea too, with CEO Sam Altman supposedly chillin’ with industry big-shots Samsung and SK Hynix. Looks like South Korea is becoming a big deal in the AI chip scene.
Rebellions’ Strategic Partnership with Samsung
In a strategic move, Rebellions announced last October its partnership with Samsung Electronics to develop the Rebel chip. They’re working together to finish developing Rebel by the end of 2024 and plan to start making a whole bunch of them in 2025. Rebel is gonna use Samsung Electronics’ super fancy 4-nanometer fabrication process and get all hooked up with their advanced memory chip technology, HBM3E. Pretty cool, huh? But that’s not all.
Rebellions is all about being different, saying that its technology and products are way more flexible than those fancy AI chips that are made specifically for certain tasks. With this flexibility, it can support different types of AI models that need AI accelerators. And the partnership goes beyond just working together, they’re also teaming up to design and make a whole bunch of Rebel. Samsung has been teaming up with Rebellions and putting in a lot of effort into their generative AI model, Samsung Gauss. This shows how serious they are about making progress in the field of AI.
The Current and Future Product Landscape
Rebellions have got this new cool stuff called Atom and Ion. Atom is like this AI chip that’s perfect for data centres, while Ion is more about edge computing. And guess what? KT, the strategic investor, is already using Atom in its cloud-based neural processing units. They’re expecting some serious cash flow from this by the end of the year. Atom is all about handling big data and language models with tons of parameters, like up to 7 billion of them.
Ion, the rebellious AI chip, was released in November 2021 and is currently being tested in the U.S. Even though Ion hasn’t snagged any paying customers just yet, it’s got some serious potential in edge computing, especially for financial services like predicting stocks and doing some rad trading.
Leadership and Future Prospects
Rebellions was started by CEO Sunghyun Park, who used to work at Morgan Stanley as a quant developer. They’re making a name for themselves in the world of AI chips, and the fact that big-shot South Korean telecom giant KT is leading their latest funding round shows that people believe in Rebellions’ potential. This startup is all about pushing boundaries and shaking things up in the AI chip world. They’re really making a name for themselves with their Rebel chip, which is set to make a big impact in the generative AI market. It’s an exciting time for innovation and there’s definitely a lot to look forward to.
