Spider-Man Miles Morales After Gameplay Review: A Spectacular Adventure!

Spider-Man Miles Morales After Gameplay Review: A Spectacular Adventure!

March 26, 2023 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

As a fan of the original Spider-Man game, I was extremely excited to play the latest instalment in the series, Spider-Man Miles Morales. And boy, it did not disappoint! From the moment I started playing, I was blown away by how much this game feels like a fresh and unique experience while still staying true to the spirit of the original.

Miles Morales is an excellent new addition to the Spider-Man universe, and his abilities as a character make for some awe-inspiring combat and stealth missions. The swinging mechanics feel so different and better, and the addition of Venom power adds a whole new level of excitement to the gameplay. Plus, swinging around New York City never gets old – it’s just so much fun!

I have to give a big shoutout to the team at Insomniac Games for their attention to detail when it comes to making the game look and feel just right. Everything from the graphics to the controller movements is absolutely top-notch. And speaking of controllers, having extra features on the PS5 controller really adds an extra layer of immersion to the game.

Spider-Man: Miles Morales Backstory

spider-man miles morales review

Miles, born to a black father and a Puerto Rican mother, is a wonderful mix of cultures and languages. What I loved most about Spider-Man Miles Morales was the story. It’s both heroic and important, with Miles taking on enemies both underground and above ground in order to keep his family and city safe. The quality of the writing is solid, and there are certain moments that will leave you feeling truly impressed and moved.

The story of Spider-Man: Miles Morales comes not long after the original game’s release, and Peter and Miles are both working as complementary Spider-Men at the outset. As the OG (Peter Parker) takes a cheeky winter vacation, Miles tries to balance his family life, while at the same time performing his new role as Spiderman after his father’s death. He is brought into the spotlight by routine web-slinging shenanigans between Roxxon Corporation and the Underground, a high-tech criminal gang led by the Tinkerer. Some of its twists and turns have superhero-level predictability. But the game does a great job fleshing out its cast, giving those predictable moments an emotional charge that allows them a chance to forgive.

The experience of Miles Morales is more straightforward than its predecessor. However, most of Miles and New York benefited from the reduced amount of work. There are fewer distractions and the story is shorter than its predecessor. Providing Miles Morales with a tighter, more intense storyline is a great idea.

Gameplay Mechanics

Similar to the original, Miles Morales is a fairly standard open-world game, offering a map of points of interest to explore. Playing through the main storyline will probably take around ten hours, along with some side jobs like solving petty crimes, collecting time capsules, and, of course, rescuing cats. Spider-Man requires me to do almost everything since I love swinging across the cityscape and climbing buildings. Regarding Spider-Man, it can almost feel like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater at times; movement is so fluid and fun that it changes how you view the urban landscape around you. As I navigate through the world, I am constantly looking for new ways to communicate. (Miles Morales also offers an extremely enjoyable THPS-style trick system so you can swing in style.)

The combat in the game feels solid, even if some of the animations are a bit goofy at times. Being able to steal your way around a lab or enemy hideout, crawling around the ceiling and walls strategically taking down the enemies as you make your way to your target is a good experience.

The swinging mechanics are extremely fast, and Miles’ abilities as a web-slinger are unique, making it even more fun to explore New York City. With improved animations and cool gadget builds the game has set a new standard for superhero games. Plus, the inclusion of Venom power adds another layer of excitement to combat and gives players an advantage in challenging situations.

The Music in Spider-Man Miles Morales is just amazing!

In SM: MM, the music should be discussed. Miles swing, the orchestral score grows louder, but the whole thing feels like an abstract hip-hop beat. The music is less bombastic than that seen in 2018’s Spider-Man. Instead, it crackles with soft percussion–the reverberating crescendo stops just short of overtaking the city. Miles (and to a lesser extent, the player) remains clued into New York as he soars through the air at breakneck speeds to the sound of bomb-ass beats. SM: MM’s use of Jaden Smith and Kid Cudi’s “On My Own” is also noteworthy–it fits as well into the game as Post Malone and Lee’s Sunflower did in Spider-Man (Source: www.gamespot.com)

Crazy Miles Morales Abilities

The game has changed a lot more than just its narrative. Miles has a unique ability that complements Peter’s ability. Among the most noteworthy aspects is his ability to turn invisible and channel bioelectricity. These are some really cool elements that can add some aural value to the game. Electro-powered special attacks can be used by Miles, and stealth missions become more fun when you temporarily turn invisible—having the pleasure of jutting down and knocking out a criminal, then disappearing, much to the confusion of the rest of the goons. These abilities push the limits of what you can do in the game in a manner that feels natural, though I would say Miles Morales has a few too many electrical puzzles. Keep an eye out for some generators.

Trophy

Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a great mini-sequel to Insomniac’s 2018 web-slinging mission. There are many trophy choices to choose from in Spiderman Miles Morales, but if you’re going for the platinum, you will need to cover everything the game offers, take down all Roxxon labs and enemy hide (Source: www.griffinsgamingguides.com)

It’s Likeably Goofy

In this spinoff, the tone is distinctive. Even though I love Peter Parker and appreciate what he does, he can be, well, obnoxious. In addition, this is especially applicable during a 30-plus hour game when his constant jokes begin to grate. At least for me, Miles is much more likeable, and the game really goes out of its way to embrace this. A scene begins at Christmas dinner, where he helps set the table, and his mom calls him about picking up milk while chasing a supervillain. This game adds quite a twist to his story. I. Then it follows. I am not going to spoil much here. It’s enough to say that Miles’ family and friends are deeply entangled in Harlem’s escalating conflict. Although I wouldn’t call it groundbreaking in any way, it was an exceptionally well-done example of a typical comic book adventure. Most of the beats may be predicted, but that doesn’t mean you won’t feel them when they do eventually strike.

As with Miles Morales’ predecessor, he takes himself seriously. Although it’s still a comic book story, it features dramatic twists and spirited scenes. It’s also a game where a superhero uses an app called TaskRabbit to alert citizens to serious crimes or just to direct selfies. A perfect balance of silly and serious is found in the game. A popular example is the unlockable spider suits you collect during the game’s run. While some outfits tie into the story, Miles may also wear an outfit or a superhero mask with a hat and scarf.

Conclusion

Overall, if you are a fan of Marvel’s Spider-Man and have yet to play Spider-Man Miles Morales, then you’re missing. If I will have to choose between Peter’s and Miles’ games, I’d probably go for the latter. It’s pretty impressive how Insomniac Games improved on everything that made the original game great while still managing to add something fresh and interesting to the mix. The game offers an excellent way to spend your time, with plenty of action-packed gameplay and a compelling story that keeps you hooked until the end. The fact that Peter Parker is missing in this version might be disappointing for some fans, but Miles Morales does an incredible job of carrying the superhero torch.

Whether you’re looking for a short activity or want to play for hours on end, Spider-Man Miles Morales is an excellent choice that will keep you entertained from start to finish.
