Story of Seasons Mobile Game Cancelled, but Tencent Licence Remains Active

Story of Seasons Mobile Game Cancelled, but Tencent Licence Remains Active

August 3, 2026 Off

Marvelous ended a separate capital-and-business alliance with Tencent subsidiary Image Frame Investment.

Tencent has stopped development of a Story of Seasons mobile game, but the licensing agreement behind the project remains active. Marvelous disclosed the cancellation while announcing the end of a separate capital-and-business alliance with Tencent subsidiary Image Frame Investment. That distinction is central to the announcement: the filing concerns one mobile title that was under development. It does not terminate the March 2019 Story of Seasons mobile licence or announce the cancellation of the wider franchise.

What happened to the Story of Seasons mobile game?

In the machine-translated English version of its July 31, 2026 regulatory disclosure, Marvelous said its board had resolved to terminate the capital-and-business alliance with Image Frame Investment. The English filing notes that the Japanese original prevails. The same disclosure says the Tencent group decided to discontinue development of “a specific title” being produced under the licence for a mobile adaptation of the Story of Seasons intellectual property.

Marvelous said Tencent reached the decision after considering the business environment and the project’s profitability. The filing does not attribute the cancellation to a creative disagreement, technical failure, regulatory problem, studio closure or game-quality issue. It also does not provide the project’s final official name, target territories, development studio or stage of completion.

The 2019 Story of Seasons licence is still active

Marvelous explicitly says the March 2019 mobile licence and other individual agreements will remain in effect. The cancelled game was therefore a specific project covered by the licence, not the licence itself. Under the agreement announced by Marvelous in March 2019, Marvelous was to supply materials for the Story of Seasons adaptation while Tencent Games handled development, distribution and operation. The continuing licence does not confirm that another mobile game is being developed. Neither the July 2026 disclosure nor the cited 2019 announcement identifies a replacement for the discontinued project.

Why is the Marvelous and Tencent alliance ending?

According to Marvelous, Image Frame Investment said it intended to sell Marvelous shares following a Tencent-group review of its investment portfolio and capital-allocation policy. Marvelous announced the termination of the capital-and-business alliance alongside that planned sale.

The July 31 filing said Image Frame’s holding was expected to fall from 20.01% to 0.99%, with the shareholder changes scheduled for August 3, 2026. Because the document described the change as scheduled, it should not be treated as confirmation that the transaction had already been completed.

The announcement followed earlier Bloomberg reporting carried by Investing.com that Tencent was reviewing minority investments in several Japanese game companies, including Marvelous. That earlier report provided context for the review but did not confirm the final Marvelous transaction.

What does the cancellation affect?

  • Discontinued: one Tencent-developed Story of Seasons mobile title that was under development.
  • Ending: Marvelous’s capital-and-business alliance with Image Frame Investment.
  • Remaining in force: the March 2019 Story of Seasons mobile licence and other individual agreements referenced in the filing.
  • Not announced: a replacement mobile project or any decision about unannounced Story of Seasons games.

Marvelous expects the matters covered by the disclosure to have only a minor effect on its consolidated financial results for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2027. That is a company-level forecast, not a guarantee about the status of any individual game.

The narrow conclusion is that Tencent has stopped work on this particular mobile project while the underlying licence survives. The filing is not a cancellation notice for Story of Seasons as a whole, but it also offers no confirmation that Marvelous or Tencent will use the continuing licence for another game.
