Former Nintendo Sales Lead Warns Switch 2 Hardware Price Hike ‘Inevitable’ Due to Global Cost Pressures

Former Nintendo Sales Lead Warns Switch 2 Hardware Price Hike ‘Inevitable’ Due to Global Cost Pressures

April 3, 2026 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

The Nintendo Switch 2 is expected to face an “inevitable” price increase, according to a former Nintendo sales executive, who cites global inflation, supply chain challenges, and rising manufacturing costs as key factors.

A former Nintendo sales lead known as ‘Sean’ has stated that the price of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 hardware will “eventually” need to increase, aligning Nintendo with recent price hikes by PlayStation and Xbox. On the Kit & Krysta podcast (April 2026), Sean commented, “Unfortunately I think eventually the hardware price is going to have to go up.” He added, “I think that there’s things that they can and seem to be doing to try and mitigate that, but I also look at this move on on software as, if I’m reading it correctly, a way to make a hardware price increase a little bit more palatable.”

Nintendo recently opted to sell digital Switch games at a lower price point than their physical counterparts in the US, a decision Sean interprets as a strategy to soften consumer reaction to an eventual hardware price increase. The company’s approach contrasts with Sony’s decision to increase the PS5’s recommended retail price in multiple markets, citing similar pressures.

Key Factors Impacting Nintendo Switch 2 Price

  • Inflation: Ongoing inflation has been “a problem for a while now”, Sean said.
  • Tariffs: Sean states tariffs are a “recent nuisance”, but adds that “they’re not going away anytime soon.”
  • Memory Prices: He highlights increased demand for chips driven by AI technology, pushing memory prices higher.
  • Oil Prices: “Within the past couple of weeks, we have issues with oil prices going through the roof,” Sean said, noting consequences for shipping costs and supply chains.
  • Helium Supply: “Helium is a by-product of producing oil. Helium is a key and unreplaceable ingredient in making semiconductors, which means hardware prices go up. … If you’re Nintendo and you’re producing cartridges, that’s going up as well.”
  • Global Events: “There’s all of these world events that have been for a while putting pressure on pricing and margins, and they don’t seem to be going away.”

Sean argues that despite Nintendo’s historic resistance to price increases, “hardware prices are going to go up I think, eventually.” He suggests the company’s efforts to diversify revenue, through merchandise such as amiibo, t-shirts, lunchboxes, and Lego, might postpone the change but won’t prevent it. “They may be able to put off raising hardware prices for a moment, but I think it’s inevitable that they’re going to go up for the first time.”

Nintendo’s Official Position and Long-Term Strategy

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed hardware pricing during a February 2026 briefing, confirming ongoing talks with suppliers to secure a stable supply of RAM and asserting that “there were no plans to increase the price of Switch 2 due to the increasing cost of memory, at least at this time.” Furukawa cautioned, “Price changes will be determined comprehensively, taking into account not only profitability but also the adoption of the platform, sales trends and market conditions.”

Sean acknowledged the company’s short-term ability to absorb some of the increased costs but warned, “There will likely come a point where the drop [in hardware margins] will be so large that it will have no choice but to increase the price of Switch 2.” He added, “If the proposition is ‘you’re going to spend a little bit more on hardware, but if you buy your games digitally, you can save money there’, that’s one way to look at it.”

He closed by noting the unprecedented convergence of external pressures, stating, “This time in particular, there’s just so many outside forces that is kind of forcing their hand in a way that they probably aren’t really used to in the past. … This is kind of new for them too, to manage through it. So I do wonder how they will manage through it and how they’re going to take steps to try to avoid it if they can.”

Nintendo Switch 2 Cost Pressures: Summary

  • Switch 2 price increase deemed “inevitable” by ex-Nintendo sales lead due to inflation, tariffs, chip shortages, rising oil and helium prices.
  • Nintendo currently offsets profit drops via digital game pricing and extensive merchandise sales.
  • No official Switch 2 price rise yet; future changes will factor in global market and profitability trends, says Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa.

The spotlight now falls on Nintendo’s capacity to delay or soften Switch 2 price increases in a turbulent global economic climate, with both internal strategies and external forces likely to shape the final call.
