Total War: SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition is delisted on Steam: what owners need to know

SEGA and Creative Assembly say existing owners can still play it, but have not announced a return date, a special refund arrangement or a specific cause for the withdrawal.

Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is no longer available to purchase on Steam. When checked on 16 October 2026, the storefront displayed a notice confirming that the game was unavailable, three days after its 13 October launch.

SEGA and Creative Assembly have acknowledged that the release did not meet their standards. In an official statement, the companies said they were working with platform holders to remove the Complete Edition temporarily, investigate the problems and reinstate the original Total War: SHOGUN 2.

For prospective buyers, the immediate answer is that the Complete Edition cannot currently be bought through its Steam page. People who already own it should retain access, according to SEGA and Creative Assembly. No special refund arrangement or return date has been announced in the official material reviewed for this update.

What has changed on Steam?

The Complete Edition launched on 13 October 2026, according to Steam’s listing. When checked on 16 October, that listing said: “Total War: SHOGUN 2 – Complete Edition is no longer available on the Steam store.”

This confirms the game’s removal from sale on Steam, rather than only an intention to withdraw it. It does not establish that every other PC storefront has completed the same process. SEGA and Creative Assembly said they were working with platform holders, but the available official evidence independently verifies the current storefront status only on Steam.

Can existing owners still play it?

Yes, according to the companies’ official statement:

“Existing owners will still be able to access and play the game.”

SEGA and Creative Assembly, 15 October 2026 statement

The companies described the withdrawal as temporary while they investigate the issues. They did not provide a date for the Complete Edition to return or specify which fixes or other changes would be required first.

Is the original Total War: SHOGUN 2 coming back?

That is the stated plan, but there is no announced timetable. SEGA and Creative Assembly said they were working “to reinstate the original game” while investigating the Complete Edition.

The original had previously been removed as a standalone Steam purchase ahead of the Complete Edition’s launch. In a pre-launch SEGA support FAQ, the publisher said the original game would no longer be purchasable on Steam from 28 September 2026, although existing owners would retain access.

That FAQ also said Steam purchasers of the Complete Edition would receive the original game and its associated DLC, excluding the Blood Pack. The withdrawal statement does not explain how that arrangement will operate after the original is reinstated or when the original will become available again.

Are refunds available?

No special refund programme has been announced in the official material reviewed for this update. SEGA and Creative Assembly have confirmed continued access for existing owners, but they have not said that refund eligibility will be extended or otherwise changed.

Anyone seeking a refund should consult the policy of the storefront where the purchase was made and check their individual eligibility. The game’s removal from sale does not, by itself, confirm that a refund will be granted.

Why was SHOGUN 2 Complete Edition pulled?

The companies acknowledged that the release had fallen short and said “the current experience is not where it needs to be.” They did not identify a particular technical or production issue as the cause of the withdrawal.

That distinction matters. Player discussion and independent reporting have cited bugs, quality-of-life complaints and allegations of undisclosed generative-AI use. The AI allegations should not be treated as established fact: PC Gamer reported that they remained unconfirmed and that SEGA had not responded to them at the time of publication.

SEGA and Creative Assembly have not said that performance, visual assets, mod support, generative AI or any other individual issue caused the withdrawal. For now, the confirmed position is narrower: the Complete Edition is unavailable on Steam, existing owners retain access, and the companies intend to bring back the original game while they investigate. The scope of any improvements, the future sales configuration and the timetable remain unannounced.
