Sony’s Next Ratchet & Clank Game Is an Arena Shooter, But It’s Only on Mobile

Sony’s Next Ratchet & Clank Game Is an Arena Shooter, But It’s Only on Mobile

November 13, 2025 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Sony just dropped a curveball for Ratchet & Clank fans: the next entry in the blockbuster series is skipping consoles and leaping straight onto mobile, and it’s not a platformer. Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble is a free-to-play, fast-paced multiplayer arena shooter now entering pre-registration. Forget saving the galaxy solo, this time you’ll be facing off against other players, competing to be the top Ranger, right from your phone or tablet.

The game’s been revealed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, published by PlayStation, and developed by Oh BibBi in partnership with Insomniac. So while this may sound like new territory, the core universe is still in seasoned hands. And for those itching to get involved as soon as possible, Ranger Rumble is already playable in select countries.

Blast, Grind, and Collect Bolts, all in the Arena

The basics: You’ll get to play as legendary heroes from across Ratchet & Clank history, customizing your own Ranger and battling it out in what’s promised to be “chaotic game modes.” There’s running. There’s dashing. There’s grinding on rails. And, of course, a pile of bolts to collect along the way. One detail that’s sure to please series regulars: Captain Qwark is back and allegedly watching your every move, according to the official synopsis.

Here’s how Sony tees it up: “Play as legendary heroes from across the galaxy and time, customize your Ranger, and unleash your skill in chaotic game modes. Jump, dash, grind, collect bolts, and become the next Galactic Ranger, and don’t forget to smile… Captain Qwark is watching you!”

Pre-registration is now open at the game’s official website, letting players claim their spot before Ranger Rumble goes wide. If you’re lucky enough to be in one of the participating countries, you might already be grinding away in its digital arenas.

Sony’s Live Service Strategy: The Numbers Don’t Lie

Why bring Ratchet & Clank to mobile, and why now? Sony’s financials point to the answer. Live service games like Helldivers 2 and MLB The Show 25 now account for over 40% of PlayStation’s first-party software revenue, based on the company’s latest report. When a juggernaut like Helldivers 2 sees what Sony calls “significantly” increased sales year on year, especially after its Xbox release in August, it’s clear there’s demand for multiplayer, always-evolving experiences.

Sony says Helldivers 2 is “doing extremely well.” The flip side? Bungie’s Destiny 2 is still underperforming compared to the company’s original projections. So, Sony is looking for its next live service hit, and with Ranger Rumble, Ratchet & Clank is their latest contender.

This is a big shift for the series, which has always been rooted in vivid single-player adventures and platforming spectacle. The last mainline outing, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, made headlines as a technical showcase for the PlayStation 5’s horsepower. Now, with Ranger Rumble, the franchise is pivoting directly into the multiplayer fight on a device nearly everyone owns.

With pre-registration live, the next few months will show if fans are ready for their beloved Lombax and robot duo to make the jump from epic campaigns to bite-sized mobile chaos.
