PHYSINT remains in development under an expanded Xbox and Kojima Productions partnership, but no platforms, release date or exclusivity terms have been announced.

Xbox has expanded its partnership with Kojima Productions to publish PHYSINT, the studio’s action-espionage game previously announced in partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment. The project remains in development, but the new agreement does not answer the biggest practical questions for players. There is still no confirmed platform list, release date or exclusivity arrangement.

Xbox announced the agreement on September 9, 2026, describing it as the next chapter in its relationship with Kojima Productions. The two companies were already working together on OD, and Xbox says their relationship also includes planned film and television collaboration. The official announcement confirms that PHYSINT is now part of the partnership.

What changed for PHYSINT

PHYSINT was originally confirmed in 2024 as a project being developed with Sony Interactive Entertainment. Kojima Productions’ official exhibition site describes it as a new action-espionage game.

PlayStation has now ended its involvement. In a public statement reproduced by Video Games Chronicle, PlayStation said: “After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with Kojima Productions on its project Physint.” PlayStation did not provide a reason for its decision.

Hideo Kojima provided more context from the studio’s perspective. According to the same report, Kojima said PlayStation Studios unexpectedly notified Kojima Productions in mid-June 2026 that it would cancel the project, after which the studio spent three months looking for a new partner. That is Kojima’s account of the sequence of events, not an independently established explanation of why PlayStation withdrew. PC Gamer separately reported the public statements from Kojima and PlayStation.

The official Xbox announcement presents the new agreement as a choice by Kojima Productions. Kojima said: “This expands our relationship with XBOX beyond OD. As we move forward with the development of PHYSINT, we remain committed to redefining the action-espionage genre for players around the world.” Xbox published the statement with confirmation of the expanded partnership.

PHYSINT is not cancelled, but it is not confirmed as an Xbox exclusive

The clearest confirmed point is that development is ongoing. Kojima said in his public statement, as reported by VGC, that development of PHYSINT “is ongoing and will continue moving forward.” The Xbox partnership therefore represents a change in publishing partner rather than the end of the game.

However, Xbox publishing PHYSINT does not by itself confirm that the game will be exclusive to Xbox consoles. The official Xbox post does not announce a release date, platforms, a PC version, Game Pass availability, console exclusivity, ownership terms, budget or distribution model. It also does not detail what, if anything, changed in the project’s commercial or production arrangements beyond the publishing partnership.

For now, claims that PHYSINT is an Xbox exclusive, a Game Pass launch title or a multiplatform release remain speculation. None of those possibilities has been confirmed in the available announcements.

What is still known about the game

Kojima Productions has provided only a limited official look at PHYSINT. During its September 2025 Beyond the Strand presentation, the studio described the title as its latest action-espionage game in development and announced Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-Seok and Minami Hamabe as cast members. Those names remain listed in the studio’s published PHYSINT update, although neither Xbox nor Kojima Productions has confirmed whether the cast or other production details changed during the publisher transition.

Xbox says more information will be shared as development progresses. Until then, the supported status is straightforward: PHYSINT is still being developed, Xbox and Kojima Productions have expanded their partnership to include it, PlayStation has stepped away, and both the reason for that departure and the game’s eventual platforms remain unannounced.
