Minecraft Sift dimension: What’s confirmed for Java and Bedrock in 2027

The Sift is confirmed for Minecraft Java and Bedrock in 2027, but its Dungeons II debut is not a complete preview of the base-game version.

Mojang Studios has confirmed that the Sift dimension is coming to Minecraft Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027. It will be Minecraft’s first new dimension in over 14 years, but Mojang has not announced a specific release date, access method or complete feature list for the base-game version.

The Sift will appear first in Minecraft Dungeons II when the game launches on September 29, 2026. Details shown for that action-RPG version should not yet be treated as promises for Java or Bedrock.

In short, the destination and 2027 release year are confirmed. Much of what players will find there remains unknown.

What is confirmed for Minecraft Java and Bedrock?

The Sift is a new Minecraft dimension planned for both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition in 2027. Mojang has not attached it to a named update or announced a narrower release window.

Mojang Design Director Laura De Llorens also described the project as a fourth dimension during an Official Xbox Podcast interview, saying, “We had been discussing the possibility of a fourth dimension for quite a while.”

The confirmed points are:

  • The Sift is a new Minecraft dimension.
  • It is planned for Java and Bedrock Edition in 2027.
  • It is Minecraft’s first new dimension in over 14 years.
  • Players will be able to visit it first in Minecraft Dungeons II, which launches on September 29, 2026.

None of those announcements establishes that the Dungeons II version will transfer feature for feature to Java and Bedrock.

In Minecraft Dungeons II, players enter the Sift through rifts, according to Mojang’s gameplay-trailer announcement. The separate Xbox Wire reveal names Meadows and Carapace among the Sift biomes featured in Dungeons II.

Those details are confirmed for Dungeons II, not for the Java or Bedrock implementation. Mojang has not said that its rifts, named biomes, mobs, blocks, hazards or traversal mechanics will all carry into the base game.

This distinction is important for anyone treating Dungeons II footage as an advance look at the 2027 Minecraft release. It shows the Sift’s initial design, but it does not provide a complete Java or Bedrock feature list.

How will players enter the Sift in Minecraft?

Mojang has not confirmed how players will access the Sift in Java or Bedrock. Xbox Wire reported that the studio was not yet saying much about access or how the Minecraft version would differ from the dimension’s Dungeons II form.

Players should therefore not assume that the rifts used in Dungeons II confirm a portal recipe, generated structure or activation method for Java and Bedrock. No base-game access method has been announced.

How Mojang describes the Sift’s identity

De Llorens explained the Dungeons II team’s creative goal in the Official Xbox Podcast interview: “We wanted part of the world of Minecraft that didn’t feel necessarily threatening or necessarily very benevolent. It’s just its own independent thing that you just have never encountered before.”

That description provides context for the Sift as designed for Dungeons II. It does not confirm that every environmental rule or gameplay idea developed for the action RPG will be retained in Java and Bedrock.

What remains unknown about the 2027 release?

  • The exact 2027 release date, game drop or update name.
  • How players will reach the Sift in Java and Bedrock.
  • Whether Meadows, Carapace or the rift access system will appear in the base game.
  • Which Dungeons II mobs, blocks, resources, hazards and mechanics will carry over.
  • Whether Java snapshots or Bedrock previews will be available before release.
  • Whether the Java and Bedrock versions will launch at the same time.

For now, Minecraft Dungeons II will provide the first playable version of the Sift on September 29, 2026. Java and Bedrock players have a confirmed 2027 release year, but the features that will define the base-game dimension are still under wraps.
