Black Myth: Wukong has been getting a lot of hype in the gaming world ever since it was first shown off. Based on the famous Chinese book “Journey to the West,” this action RPG is all about tough gameplay, awesome graphics, and a killer story. Here’s a comprehensive look at what you can expect from Black Myth: Wukong’s gameplay.

Core Gameplay Mechanics

1. Soulslike Combat: Black Myth: Wukong features combat mechanics reminiscent of Soulslike games, known for their difficulty and precision. Players will need to master parrying, dodging, and precise timing to succeed in battles. The protagonist, known as the Destined One, wields the Golden Cudgel, an extendable staff that is central to both combat and traversal.

In Journey to the West, Wukong has this cool staff called the Ruyi Jingu Bang that can change size whenever he wants. The staff is a big deal in Black Myth’s trailers, and you can spot the Chinese characters for “Ruyi Jingu Bang” on his weapon when the “true” Wukong shows up at the end of the 13-minute trailer. Throughout the footage that’s been released, Wukong is seen using his staff to do all sorts of awesome stuff like climbing really high, bashing foes, deflecting arrows, and fighting celestial enemies up in the sky.

2. Shapeshiftting Abilities: A unique feature of Black Myth: Wukong is the ability to transform into various forms. These transformations include turning into a golden cicada (a bestial version of himself that deals excessive damage) for stealth and exploration, a bat/bee-like bug for flight, and even adopting the form of enemies defeated in combat – as seen in gameplay footage where he turns into Huodaolang, a lupine enemy with a flaming polearm. These abilities add a strategic layer to both combat and puzzle-solving within the game.

3. Advanced AI and Physics: The game leverages advanced AI to create challenging enemies that adapt to the player’s strategies. Physics-based interactions enhance the realism of combat and environmental interactions, making every encounter and puzzle feel dynamic and engaging.

Key Gameplay Features

1. Diverse Combat Stances: The Golden Cudgel can be used in multiple stances—Smash, Pillar, and Thrust—each offering different advantages in combat. This versatility allows players to adapt their fighting style to different enemies and situations, making each battle unique.

2. Magic and Spells: The protagonist can cast various spells, such as creating protective fire rings or summoning clones to aid in battle. In the novel, Sun Wukong could make copies of himself using just a strand of his hair. This power, similar to Naruto’s clone jutsu, was in use when Wukong fights Lingxuzi in the 13-minute trailer. It seems to have a time limit, similar to Wukong’s other shapeshifting abilities. These magical abilities are crucial for overcoming the game’s challenging bosses and hordes of enemies.

3. Boss Battles: Black Myth: Wukong is known for its epic boss battles. Players will face a variety of formidable foes, each with unique attack patterns and weaknesses. These encounters require strategic thinking and mastery of the game’s combat mechanics.

4. Cloud Travel: If you’re into Dragonball, you’ve likely heard of Goku’s Flying Nimbus cloud. It was inspired by Wukong’s cool cloud somersault trick that let him zip across miles in a flash. The game Black Myth: Wukong has shown off some cloud travel in its trailers, but we’ll have to wait and see if it’s a big part of the game or just for fast travel.

5. Time-Freezing: In all the trailers, Wukong shows off his awesome fighting skills, but one of his best moves seems to be freezing enemies in their tracks. This lets him power up his staff for big hits or take a quick break. And the best part? It works on all kinds of enemies, big or small.

Black Myth: Wukong is poised to be a groundbreaking entry in the action RPG genre, combining challenging Soulslike gameplay with a rich narrative and stunning visuals. With its release set for August 2024, gamers have a lot to look forward to.
