GTA 6 Staff Accuse Rockstar of Gender Pay Gap, Bonus Secrecy, and Contracted Crunch Work

GTA 6 Staff Accuse Rockstar of Gender Pay Gap, Bonus Secrecy, and Contracted Crunch Work

July 2, 2026 Off By Ibraheem Adeola

Unionised Rockstar workers allege a growing gender pay gap, subjective bonus practices, and enforced ‘crunch’ hours are undermining staff rights during GTA 6’s development, with claims that ‘a fifth of your salary could be withheld without any justification.’

Union members at Rockstar Games, involved on major projects including Grand Theft Auto 6, have publicly raised a series of allegations about chronic workplace issues. According to testimony from three Rockstar Game Workers Union representatives speaking to Game Developer, employees face increasing pay disparity between genders, unclear and unpredictable bonus schemes, as well as contractual pressure to accept excessive overtime – all of which, they contend, are leading to a deterioration in staff wellbeing and equity.

Opaque Bonus System and Withheld Earnings

Bonuses form a considerable portion of Rockstar employees’ annual earnings, but staff report inconsistent criteria and significant variability in payments. One anonymous employee stated, “When the bonus is particularly good, it can be a windfall, but often the bonus is disappointing and one can end up being paid considerably less than expected for the year.” The reasoning behind bonus distribution remains, according to workers, ‘nebulous, inconsistent between departments, even inconsistent between team members within the same department, and sometimes hinges on completely subjective or retroactive criticisms.’

Staff further allege that management exploits this uncertainty, making bonuses ‘all completely discretionary for the company,’ compelling employees to remain ‘as pliable as possible to their boss’s whims’ to protect their potential income. One source articulated the situation’s severity: “Imagine [how you might feel if] a fifth of your salary could be withheld without any justification or based on a single surprise factor.”

Widening Gender Pay Gap and Scrapped Equality Measures

Rockstar is accused of failing to uphold pay equality despite previous initiatives to balance median gender-based earnings. According to union accounts, interventions to address wage disparity were implemented but later abandoned, and the gender pay gap has since widened. This reversal follows direct employee feedback and contradicts claims of ongoing improvement efforts.

While recently laid-off staff staged protests outside Rockstar’s Edinburgh office in 2025, the whistleblowers in the current report specified they were not part of those layoffs, instead focusing on entrenched systemic issues within current teams.

‘Crunch’ Codified in Contracts Amid UK Labour Safeguards

Another dominant complaint is Rockstar’s approach to mandatory overtime or ‘crunch,’ with claims the company has attempted to embed overtime expectations in staff contracts. In the UK, the Working Time Regulations restrict employers from mandating excessive work hours, unless employees actively opt out. Rockstar, union representatives claim, pre-loads contracts with an ‘opt out’ clause by default, requiring workers to “opt back in” should they wish to retain their legal right to refuse excessive overtime.

One staff member summarised the issue: “Part of the problem with crunch is that there is not an agreed definition, and now it seems the company thinks that offering specific and limited compensation as an incentive for overtime means it no longer qualifies as crunch.”

Take-Two and Rockstar’s Official Response

When reached for comment, a Take-Two spokesperson claimed, “We strive to make the best games possible by giving our talented teams world-class work environments and ongoing career opportunities. We have fostered a culture which is focused on teamwork, excellence, and kindness, and where we support and reward the team across all levels of the business through competitive compensation and benefits policies.”

The spokesperson continued, “We are proud that as a result, our employee retention is well above the industry standard. We have received a request from a union seeking to discuss voluntary recognition. We value an open and constructive dialogue with all stakeholders and will arrange to meet.”

  • Union allegations: Gender pay gap has widened; pay and bonus transparency has declined; crunch work is being normalised in contracts.
  • Bonus system: Highly variable; up to 20% of salary can be withheld for unclear reasons.
  • Working Time Regulations: Rockstar contracts default to “opt out”, circumventing UK legal protections against excessive overtime.
  • Company response: Rockstar and Take-Two highlight “world-class work environments” and say staff retention exceeds industry averages.

This latest account from Rockstar staff presents serious challenges to the reputation of a business long lauded for blockbuster releases, raising questions over labour practices in one of the world’s highest-profile games studios. With Grand Theft Auto 6’s launch on the horizon, scrutiny of Rockstar’s workplace culture, and its response to union demands, will only intensify, both among employees and in the wider games industry.
